I believe therapy should be a collaborative, exploratory, and compassionate space for clients to work toward their goals. I utilize a blend of different treatment modalities that are psychodynamic, relational, and trauma-informed, as well as integrate cognitive behavioral techniques and mindfulness practices when appropriate.

Though my oulook is fundamentally psychodynamic, I draw on a variety of approaches, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical-behavioral therapy, and Internal Family Systems.
I am a psychotherapist and New York Times best-selling author who works with adolescents, teens, and adults. My focus is on helping my patients, young people included, to discover and explore the patterns, beliefs, and default behaviors they bring to their most vital relationships: to their parents, their siblings, their friends, their intimate partners, and not least of all to themselves. When working with adolescents and teens, I consider it crucial to look at the whole family, to better understand how its members communicate, share space, and set boundaries with one another.

Operating from this foundation, I utilize an integrative approach that draws upon my training in trauma-focused therapies (including EMDR and Internal Family Systems), psychodynamic psychotherapy, CBT/DBT, and mindfulness practice.
Have you experienced a trauma, loss, stressor, or big life transition and are struggling with its impact? Our minds and bodies can react to stressful experiences in a range of ways, including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, and more. In response to these painful emotional experiences, we can come to rely on methods of coping that, over time, may lead us to feeling even more stuck. Our work in therapy will help you better understand the source of these challenges, develop new strategies for navigating them, and put you on a path towards the health, happiness, and fulfillment that you deeply deserve.

With over a decade of experience, I specialize in evidence-based treatments like EMDR and CBT, tailored to each client's unique needs.
Seeking help for trauma takes immense courage. You've already taken the first step by considering therapy, and that's a powerful testament to your strength. Trauma can leave deep scars, affecting how we see ourselves and the world. But healing is possible. Through therapy, you can learn to process your experiences, develop coping strategies, and reclaim your sense of safety and control. I use a trauma-informed approach that creates a safe, non-judgmental space for you to explore at your own pace. I understand that trust may be difficult, and I'm committed to respecting your boundaries and empowering you throughout your journey.

With the use of various cognitive behavioral techniques, I will teach you skills to cope with challenges in a healthier way.
My goal as a therapist is to create a safe space that is supportive and non judgmental. I want you to feel heard and understood. I believe the relationship between the therapist and client is the foundation of therapy. As a therapist and dietitian, I believe the journey to mental health involves caring for ourselves in a holistic manner. How we think, what we eat, how we move impacts our mental well-being. Problems may arise when thoughts become distorted and negatively impact ones view of self and life. Therapy provides the opportunity to explore these challenges and create thought patterns that promotes self-growth and healing.

During the therapy process I utilize therapeutic principles from cognitive-behavioral, psychoanalytic, supportive, and interpersonal schools of thought.
I believe that every person is equipped with the ability to overcome challenges in their lives, however, sometimes, we get stuck. My goal is to help you grow and gain insight into yourself and your struggles while acquiring the tools you need to face these struggles, and new struggles, on your own.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) Therapists

How does cognitive behavioral therapy work?

Cognitive behavioral therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophizing or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioral therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioral therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
