Relationships are not easy. We all bring pain and patterns from our past into current relationships, making them feel loaded, tense, and stuck at times. It can be overwhelming trying to navigate strong emotions, betrayals, challenging life events, or just everyday disagreements. But with awareness and understanding we can let go of the constraints of the past and make changes in our interpersonal lives.

My specialty is working with Black, brown and multi-ethnic, non-monogamous and QTGNC/questioning folks experiencing depression, anxiety/panic, complex trauma, and relationship or social transitions. In addition, I am experienced serving folks with a range of identities struggling with body image, disordered eating, substance misuse, self-harm, and chronic illness, including chronic pain and social stigma. I work particularly well with folks looking to decolonize their minds, relationships and lives, and generate new values-based, life-affirming constructs for themselves.

My therapeutic lens is informed by studies in social work, psychoanalysis, Applied Polyvagal Theory, Somatic Experiencing, & Pain Reprocessing Therapy.
Have you tried therapy before, but found that it didn't quite work for you? Maybe you stayed with one therapist for too long and never saw the results you were looking for. Or maybe you found that "just talking" about your problems was not moving you toward the change you were hoping to make. If you are hungry for personal growth and willing to work at it, the breakthrough you're seeking is within reach. At Brooklyn Somatic Therapy, we integrate a mindfulness-based, experiential and somatic approach to psychotherapy.

Therapy begins with a curiosity. Perhaps you want to understand why you are feeling the way you do, you feel stuck in a particular pattern, or you are feeling a pull to deepen your understanding of yourself and your relationships with others. There are certain universal threads we all share - our desire and need to connect with others, a call to create, our desire to discover a sense of purpose and make our unique mark, and our desire to find joy and presence. I am here to guide you in finding meaning and fulfilment where you seek it.

It is not easy to find someone with whom to share your inner world. As a therapist, I seek to provide a secure holding space that can assist in containing those feelings, because I believe that having a judgement-free space to develop awareness is important to one’s mental health. In this process, I will help you explore all the different parts of yourself, even the ones that feel the most shameful or unwanted. This process allows you to gain a more dynamic sense of yourself by getting to know the parts that have been kept at a distance. I believe this work can help make the intolerable a bit more tolerable.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
