As a mental health clinican with over forty years of life experience, I believe that perception affects an individual's performance. I find that if a person believes they can do something well, they will do it well and vice versa. I am especially interested in this observable fact and how an individual's perception and cognitive process affects their behavior. Interestingly enough most people normalize behaviors, behaving according to how their community, family, friends or worst yet life long patterns of maladaptive behaviors; equipping my clients with a diverse set of tools to handle life stressors is essential for optimum living.

An ideal client would possibly seeking out support and guidance when struggling with a current experience or still processing an experience of the past. The clients goal will be to work on their selves with the help of the therapist to better understand their own needs and wishes. Their goal would be to navigate and heal themselves so that they may work on learning to accept themselves.

You wake up everyday and start the same daily grind. Week after week, you start to wonder "When does it get better?" You join the gym, try to meet new people, but you don't feel any different. You want to feel happy, confident and yourself again, but life keeps getting in the way. Plus, walking around wearing a mask is getting exhausting and you are ready to do something different, you just don't know where to begin. Especially since you don't feel right talking to other people, you don't want to feel like a burden. So you keep things to yourself, but it is time to start thinking about YOU and how to be happy again. You deserve it!

As a therapist, my goal is not give you advice or tell you what to do. I want to be able to help you make the most informed decision for yourself, and guide you in finding a solution or outcome that would best suite your needs.

Do you worry about feeling uncomfortable or out of place when looking for a therapist? Do you feel that you are not well-represented in therapeutic communities? Are you concerned that your mental state could worsen before it improves? It's natural to feel apprehensive about seeking therapy but remember that taking the first step is often the hardest part.

Having worked many years in busy NYC clinics, I have a broad experience base and am comfortable working with many different kinds of patients, including adults experiencing depression and other mood problems, people with obsessive compulsive disorder, people who have experienced trauma, and people going through major life changes and transitions. While I'm most comfortable working longer-term (six months and more) with patients, we will talk about your preferred therapy length in our initial consult. This therapy length refers to psychotherapy; consults for gender-affirming care letters are often only 1-2 sessions.

With many years in the social work field I have worked with clients in a variety of areas that includes schools, shelters, foster care, and imprisoned adults just to name a few. I have been able to provide the support needed to get through life’s toughest times and my clients were able to get to the other side with life long skills that work. For many of us, we weren't taught how to properly cope with depression and anxiety we experience which often times led to poor decision and even poorer coping skills.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
