My passion is action/experiential therapy methods and group therapy.
Take a full, deep breath...by reading this, you have already taken a step in seeking support. It only takes that first courageous step away from the pain, confusion or fear toward the path of freedom and the life you desire. When you are ready for that step, I am here to support you on a healing journey. Therapy will uncover any self-destructive beliefs or habits (addictions/ patterns) that prevent a fuller expression of who you know you can be. Our work and my hope for you would be to experience feeling more fully alive with a sense of joy, purpose and freedom.

Often we have little or no say in the difficulties that befall us. We have our own health problems, our relationship troubles, our work demands - as well as those of the people we love. Often we don't know what to do or we can't do what we wish. In spite of not being able to change circumstances, we do have a say in how we relate to these conflicts and transitions. Looking at our own response to crisis, both large and small, is an important part of therapy. In looking at our response, we are on a journey of self discovery and knowledge. Even in hard times there is a kind of joy that comes from self understanding and awareness.

Emotions can really suck. Due to our individual histories, we develop means to reduce intense emotional experiences that have been inexplicitly linked to anxiety. This can lead to behaviors and means of relating that lead to perpetual anxiety and destructive relationships with ourselves and others. In therapy, we can work together to recognize unconscious patterns and resolve unconscious emotional conflicts; the goal is an increase in happiness and quality of life.

Hello! If you struggle with thoughts that keep "recycling" and emotions (or emotional numbness) that keep you stuck in old patterns and unsatisfying relationships, you are not alone. Most of us have never learned how to deal with painful, insistent thoughts, memories and feelings. I have over 17 years of experience helping my clients learn and integrate ways to move beyond depression, anxiety, anger, shame, and trauma. You bring your longings, and I bring deep respect for your experience and values, as well as abiding hope (and a touch of humor). Together, we open a path to a life full of meaning and fulfilling relationships.

Life's challenges can feel overwhelming. Sometimes, we feel as though something is wrong, but we are unable to pinpoint/identify it. Other times we just need someone to talk to... The road to recovery from anything can be daunting, and I would be honored if you would allow me to accompany you on your Journey.

I am a firm believer that healing and transformation within an individual can ignite subsequent change within the family unit and larger community. While many may associate relationships with harm and debilitating pain, relationships can also serve as an avenue for healing and restoration of the soul. I aspire to serve as an agent of change for those seeking to reconnect with their authentic self, faith/core beliefs, and primary relationships by addressing persisting challenges that may have been overshadowed by symptoms of these root issues. I wholeheartedly believe that you are the starting point for change in your own life.

A solution of the past can be the downfall of your present as well. I believe that in order to truly help someone; one must first seek to understand and then to be understood. Treat yourself as if you are someone worth being helped. To succeed in doing so, one must gain a deeper level of self-awareness through connecting the unconscious patterns of today, to the past traumatic events we have experienced. Understanding that the external world is a direct reflection of what is happening in the internal world, your perception can be a deciding factor to a new reality. Your life is what you choose it to be.

Experiential Therapy

How does experiential therapy work?

Experiential therapy works by allowing an individual to use their creativity to re-imagine themselves and their lives in an effort to process their emotions. Experiential therapy may take many forms, including engaging clients through art, re-enactments, role-playing, music, or forms of physical recreation. By focusing on these activities, experiential therapists help individuals identify the emotions they associate with previous experiences and work together to cope with negative reactions, like fear, anger, or shame.

Is experiential therapy evidence-based?

Experiential therapy incorporates many therapy modalities, some of which have been more closely researched than others. Music therapy, for example, has been shown to help with sleep problems. Some studies find that art therapy can be beneficial for those with eating disorders or personality disorders, while other research suggests that such approaches have little impact.

How long does experiential therapy last?

The duration of experiential therapy will depend on the type of therapy used as well as the severity of the challenges an individual faces. Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Art therapy may comprise 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Music therapy sessions generally last between 30 and 50 minutes and can be scheduled weekly or on an as-needed basis. For each therapy type, clients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

Does experiential therapy help with trauma?

Trauma is one area where experiential therapy may be useful. Traumatic experiences such as combat or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating visual art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. Listening to music can be relaxing, while making music as part of a group provides plenty of opportunities to connect with other people. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, or who have been physically or emotionally abused.
