In our fast-paced world, it is easy to become anxious, depressed, angry, and/or overwhelmed. If it feels unmanageable at times, that makes sense. Our brains weren’t designed to be flooded with so much information globally and in our personal lives with minimal support. Add in additional stressors such as trauma, challenging family dynamics, or parenting, and it can feel like a pressure cooker ready to explode. However, you are not alone. Therapy is a wonderful tool to help release pressure and learn ways to manage challenging emotions so that you can be your best self.

On the outside it looks like you have it all together but on the inside it feels like your drowning. You find your mind is constantly racing with worry about how others will see you, fear they won't like you and everything you feel like you have to do. People often call you a perfectionist but that's just your way of controlling what they can see. You constantly feel shame or guilt when your life doesn't look like others. Only now you've done so much to try and keep up the perfect mask that you've forgotten who you really are. You've decided that you deserve to know and live life as your real self.

Being a human is often complicated and sometimes painful. As a therapist I believe that developing a greater understanding of self and connection to the world can make existence meaningful and hopefully, a bit easier. I bring a trauma-informed perspective to my work and I am trained in EMDR and Brainspotting. I consider my approach to be flexible and eclectic; while I am versed in different modalities, I recognize that there is not one “correct” approach in this important work.

Some individuals and families need help handling scary situations. Psychological trauma is frequently misunderstood and can cause shame, guilt, and fear. I offer a space free of judgement in which to better understand behavior, trauma, family dynamics, attachment, pregnancy, birth, new parenthood, and sexuality. These issues effect family and relational functioning and can result in high-conflict family dynamics. If you have lost your sense of self or sense of family, I am here to help you chart a path back to yourself and each other.

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?
You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.
How does treatment for ADHD work?
Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.
Are there specific medications for ADHD?
Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.
How long does treatment for ADHD take?
It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
