I have been a social worker at a large NYC hospital for over thirty years, in addition to maintaining a private practice. Most of the people I've encountered have either struggled with a chronic condition and all the associated family and mental health issues- or had the upheaval of a serious diagnosis. Illness impacts every aspect of an individuals life- from employment, to disclosure, to intimate relationships. My approach is empathetic, yet direct and I have an excellent grasp of the challenges of dealing with the health care system. My work is to empower clients to utilize their strengths and to develop new coping strategies.

While many of us face similar life challenges, the ways in which these experiences impact us varies greatly. I strive to tailor my therapeutic approach to the needs of each unique individual, couple, and family. I utilize the process of mutual exploration of issues that stem from the past while staying rooted in the present issues that prompted the decision to seek out help. In times of crisis, I shift into a more active role and focus on skills coaching and managing stress. I provide individual therapy to adolescents, adults, and older adults and have experience treating families and couples.

I use a humanistic, person centered, relational and strength based approach in individual, couples and family therapy.
Feeling alone, isolated even when we are in a relationship is very common. We often question ourselves and doubt our ability to create lasting bonds. Some of these common challenges include communication difficulties, infidelity, loss of intimacy, financial pressures, difficulty balancing individual, work, couple and family expectations. We often find it difficult to share our challenges and vulnerabilities.

Together, we will be able to make better sense of experiences like anxiety and depression, self-sabotaging behaviors, attention problems, grief and loss, as well as family and marital issues.
If you've reached this page you are likely seeking a different kind of conversation. One in which all of you will be heard in a spirit of safety and respect, without judgment or criticism. A conversation which may activate your native abilities to understand, tolerate, and ease internal stress, gain genuine insight into troubling relationships, and develop more ease and control over the challenges in living that each of us faces daily.

Childhood and adolescence is a trying time for those in it and their family. Your child may be struggling with ADHD, motivation, impulsivity, depression, difficulty with peers, anxiety, autism, video game addiction or other any number or combination of other challenges, and that is alright. Adversity is natural at all points in our lives, but there is worth in addressing and meeting these challenges to improve your child/adolescent's well being and help them function more effectively to achieve greater success and happiness as soon as possible.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
