I support individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, mood disorders, substance use issues, family/relationship issues, and life transitions.
The most important indicator for success in therapy is the relationship between therapist and client. If you don't feel connected to the therapist you're working with, you likely won't benefit. I'm confident that my style as a therapist is one you'll feel comfortable with. I am very much “me” in and out of therapy. You may be feeling fearful to take this first step, or possibly overwhelmed by the many therapist pages you're coming across; however, with each step you take, your confidence to take another will build.

I am a true believer that we are spiritual beings that are having physical experiences. At times, these physical experiences can cause us to feel detached from community with ourselves, our family members, and friends. This detachment can bring about feelings and emotions that are difficult to sit with. Feelings like sadness, worry, hopelessness, confusion, and emptiness. These feelings are normal and my goal is to create a safe space for you to find your way back to community through humanizing your experiences; to use your strengths along with the resources around you to make that journey seem more possible.

I have supported different populations over the past several years including individuals and groups facing grief and loss, significant life changes, depression, anxiety, and trauma related concerns.
I strive to remain trauma-informed and anti-oppressive in my approach, and I am committed to safety, openness and care in my practice. As an Australian born to immigrant parents and now settled in New York City, I have personal experience in coping with cross cultural transition. I am curious and sensitive to how race, ethnicity, and gender influence our being in the world, and mindful of this in my therapeutic work.

I treat individual and couples issues, relationship and sexual concerns, anxiety, trauma, stress management, women's issues, and career uncertainty, Kirsten has been trained in CBT, EMDR and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy.
Now accepting Lyra benefits. You deserve a life that feels good. We know that even good relationships can get stuck in unhealthy patterns. Do you find that when you are trying to connect with your partner you end up in a cycle of communication that's not helpful or productive? Do you retreat and silence it until next time? There is always next time… Maybe this time they will understand…we become louder in hopes they see how hurt we are.The more we aren't seen and heard the more resentful we become. The explosions become more significant and the intimacy ceases, now you are just resentful roommates.— It doesn't have to be this way.

With support, you can learn to navigate stress, anxiety, fear, confusion, transition, grief, and loss.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 30 years of experience, working with individuals, couples and families who are reporting issues related to life transitions, anxiety, depression and addiction/recovery concerns.
Change can be challenging, especially where there are no roadmaps for us to follow. We look for the guideposts, but in this evolving and sometimes uncertain world, solutions may be hard to find. Working together, and collaboratively, we can achieve goal-focused problem solving strategies. I believe that everyone wants to feel better; identifying what that looks like for each individual, couple or family is part of the work...and part of the journey.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
