I enjoy working with teens and adults who are struggling with family conflict, identity development, relationship challenges, depression/anxiety, or a history of traumatic experiences. My clients would describe me as warm, compassionate, supportive, and insightful. In therapy, my goal is to help empower clients to find a path that feels more centered and safe, where they feel most fully themselves

Many people create lives which appear to be enviable but are not able to enjoy them. Others appear to have assembled all the pieces for success and happiness but repeatedly sabotage themselves. Why? I believe the answer often involves safety issues that are not understood. While the person is objectively safe, psychologically they are not. And when the brain is presented with a choice between happiness and survival, it chooses survival. The result may be blocked capacity for joy or a penchant for chaotic choices that subvert professional success and loving relationship. The prime mover of these patterns is rooted in personal memory.

As a licensed counseling psychologist, I provide psychotherapy to adolescents and adults. I enjoy working with individuals who describe themselves as ‘overthinkers,’ ‘people-pleasers,’ and/or ‘perfectionists’ and who often experience critical self-talk, self-doubt, and 'stuckness' in their emotional and/or relational lives. My passion for the intersection of mental and medical health leads me to enjoy supporting individuals affected by chronic illness and eating disorders, as well as the family caregivers of loved ones with these conditions. Additionally, as a former competitive dancer, I really enjoy working with dancers/artists.

I believe that where we came from inevitably affects who we are, but does not need to define or constrain us in perpetuity. I want to understand where you’re coming from and where you want to go. My job is to listen, to try to understand how you see the world, and help you understand what patterns may hold you back. I am warm, humorous, thoughtful and patient. Our time together is yours and nothing is out of bounds. I hope to create a safe space where we can creatively look at your life and try to understand your concerns, doubts, fears and triumphs.

My approach to therapy is conversational in style. Over my more than 25 years of practice, I have found that interaction enhances the energy level in the room and builds a strong relationship between my client and myself. I offer a good deal of feedback and it is in this give and take that we define the vital issues confronting a person. This relationship is a therapeutic alliance, a conversation between two people interacting as equal members of a team, to achieve the goals that have been set. This therapeutic alliance is the foundation for all the work that we do.

My practice is with couples and adult individuals. Some of the clients I work with have sexual concerns and/or relational problems. I have worked with all kinds of couples who have been together two weeks to fifty years including same sex and heterosexual couples. I am an active therapist and tailor interventions to your style. Each person is unique, and I don't believe that one size fits all. I also believe in the power of humor. And in the power of appreciation of ourselves, respect and acceptance of each other with all our human imperfections.

Online Therapists

Is online therapy as effective as in-person?

Numerous studies suggest that online therapy can be as effective as in-person therapy. However, further research is needed to determine if online therapy provides the same benefits across all client populations. Individuals with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, or those who may benefit from in-person check-ins, like those with eating disorders, may not experience the same level of benefit from online therapy. Nonetheless, the success of online therapy, much like in-person therapy, often hinges on the quality of the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client rather than the specific modality of therapy used.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of therapy conducted online?

One of the main advantages of online therapy is its convenience for both clients and therapists. It also allows clients who require specialized therapy to access a wider range of professionals than they could with only in-person sessions. Additionally, online therapy may be a more affordable option in some cases and often offers the same insurance benefits as in-person therapy. However, online therapy may not be suitable for everyone, especially those who value face-to-face interaction with a therapist. Therapists may find it more challenging to assess clients accurately in an online setting due to reduced nonverbal cues on camera. There is also the increased risk that disruptions caused by external factors, such as technology malfunctions, can hinder the therapy session. For these reasons, many therapists offer a "hybrid" therapeutic approach, alternating between seeing clients in-person and online.

Is online therapy suitable for children and adolescents?

Just like with adults, the accessibility and convenience of online therapy can greatly benefit children and adolescents. In fact, children and adolescents may be more accustomed to navigating online platforms than older adults, making online sessions feel more natural for them. Teens might also be interested in using additional online tools, such as therapist-recommended apps, as an adjunct to online therapy sessions. Apps for developing CBT skills, practicing mindfulness exercises, or tracking thoughts and moods can be helpful for teens receiving therapy. However, it's important to note that not all therapeutic modalities are well-suited to online therapy, especially those used with younger children. For example, play therapy, which helps younger children express their emotions, often requires in-person sessions to be fully effective.

Can I receive prescriptions and medication management with online therapy?

The ability for psychiatrists to prescribe medications through online therapy varies based on the medication and the states where the medical professional and client are located. While many prescribing regulations were relaxed during the COVID-19 pandemic, some states still enforce rules, especially concerning controlled substances, which may mandate an in-person visit before prescribing. Generally, however, medical professionals can prescribe non-controlled substances through online therapy sessions just as they do during in-person sessions.
