Are you struggling with mental health symptoms - anxiety, depression, relationship or family issues, intrusive thoughts, isolation, loneliness, grief or general "stress"? The discomfort may be the result of a short-term situational experience. Or it could be something you have struggled with for years. Counseling or psychotherapy can help you reduce or eliminate the discomfort you are experiencing. Just as people at times experience uncomfortable physical health symptoms, they can also experience uncomfortable mental health symptoms. The good news is, you can regain control over your emotions, your thoughts and your life!

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who specializes in the treatment of trauma. I define trauma as an unhealed wound that continues to affect daily living. People who experience trauma often develop adaptive strategies to cope, but those strategies tend to become problematic as time goes by. It is important to remember that no child is responsible for their own abuse. Any assault on a person is the responsibility of the person who is committing violence. Trauma is not weakness, but an opportunity to become strong at the broken places.

Normal is just a setting on your dryer. If you agree with this, then I'm your guy! I don't believe in a "one size fits all" approach. I work collaboratively with individuals to help them achieve the skills and insight they need to successfully navigate through challenges posed by daily stressors, including, but not limited to: relationships, work, school, and physical illness. By providing a holistic approach, I support individuals in achieving their overall health; physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. I will respectfully consider your cultural background, religion, and personal beliefs while working together.

While some new clients seek Neurofeedback as the first treatment option for their struggles, most clients come because typical treatments have failed. They are desperate for a real, sustained change! Whether it's the child on too many meds with no real gains, the student still anxious after practicing their cognitive restructuring for years, or the therapy-exhausted, still struggling adult...most have tried a bit of everything but found little success. Upon doing their research, they discover that Neurofeedback offers the chance to truly change how the brain functions by teaching the regulation of brainwaves without side effects.

Any therapy begins with a surface challenge causing life discomfort, where clients seek to "fix," "change," "get rid of," or "not feel/experience" issues like anger, relationship intimacy, anxiety, or decision-making difficulties. As trust builds in the therapeutic relationship, we delve deeper into untangling complex situations, considering cultural background and unique perspectives. Therapy facilitates changes on the level of values, life perspectives, self-reliance, and self-worth. Change takes time; just as it took years to form old habits, adopting new approaches is a gradual process.

Hi, I'm Ben. I'm a licensed mental health counselor in Delmar. What continues to amaze me as a therapist is how resilient people are. I've worked with people going through traumatic experiences and I've seen them go on to live meaningful, fulfilling lives. I strongly believe people can overcome the immense obstacles life throws their way. I have a particular interest in working with younger men (20's and 30's), as they face unique challenges and historically have been less likely to seek help.

There is much to be said of the idea that a therapist should be a “good fit.” If you don’t feel there is a connection to build on and lessons to be learned, there is no harm in stating that truth and moving on. I’ve worked with people for a few months and some for many years. It’s important to feel you are getting something from your therapy. Therapeutic relationships perform the best when both therapist and client are mutually invested in the work. I deeply appreciate clients who commit and face the sometimes-painful work of therapy, knowing they are working toward a better day, a better life.

If anxiety, stress or lack of motivation is holding you back or making everyday life more difficult, please reach out to me for a free consultation. Together, my clients and I work to "make friends with our anxiety." This means, rather than seeing anxiety and stress as our enemy, we listen to what it's trying to tell us and learn to use it to our benefit. Rather than struggling against our feelings, our work will focus on understanding them and using them to help us achieve our goals and live a full life. I also specialize in relationship/family issues, ADHD, trauma, and college mental health.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
