Getting stuck in old thoughts and behaviors block us from being true to ourselves and having satisfying relationships with our partner, friends, and family members.
Couples who call me say they've drifted apart, feel more like roommates, and affection has stopped. Ineffective patterns of communication prevent them from reaching to each other. The magic in their relationship has died and the dance has ended. Individuals who call me say they are exhausted, discouraged, and dissatisfied with life. Old thoughts and behaviors continue to negatively impact who they are, what they want to accomplish, and their relationships. They have lost the meaning and magic of life. Healthy relationships, whether with yourself or others, are key to a happy, satisfying, life and keeping the magic going.

You know that your family loves you, they tell you that all the time, but it may not always feel like it or you may question it. Sometimes you feel like you’re left to fend for yourself and there’s nowhere you feel like you belong. Loneliness is when you’re surrounded by people but never really feeling connected to them. As a parent, it is incredibly painful to see this child that you love so deeply but you are left to question if you’ve done enough.

You often find yourself wanting to reach out to them, but you fear reaching out may be more harmful than good. You lost a partner, family member, or close friend and find it difficult to navigate the grief of someone you truly cared for. Sitting in this conflict and grief can be overwhelming and leave you feeling drained. In the end, you find yourself stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Whether you were born with a genetic condition, or have had an injury in the last year, living with a disability that causes ongoing pain can seem hopeless. If your pain is impacting your relationships with family and friends, you're not alone. If your conditions interfere with your ability to do ever day tasks, you are worthy. If the quality of your life feels at the mercy of others, you can experience stability. Evidence-based practices include CBT, EMDR, Trauma-Focused CBT, Mindfulness-Based CBT, Interpersonal Therapy, Motivational Enhancement, Solutions-Focused Therapy, and Family Systems Therapy.
In any given year, 1 in 5 adults in the United States is impacted by depression or anxiety. Are you walking through life alone? I strive to see, hear, understand, and empower you to reach your desires and capacity while navigating the challenges and seasons of life. Are you wired and tired, albeit parenting, relationally, occupationally, or perhaps you are grieving the loss of health or a loved one, or life has taken a turn you aren't prepared for? Addictions can be seductive, cunning, and baffling and result in a gradual erosion of what matters. You are worthy of a gentler, softer way through life that I will guide you through.

You are only as happy as your unhappiest child. If your child's anxiety, ADHD, or disruptive behaviors are causing your family unnecessary stress, I can help. In working with me, you and your child will build skills and learn specific tools to manage these symptoms through a variety of techniques including mindfulness practices, cognitive-behavioral therapy, social thinking strategies, and/or Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). At this time, I am offering in-person sessions and teletherapy (e.g., HIPPA-compliant video conferencing) in North Dakota, and teletherapy exclusively to Massachusetts residents.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
