I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) trained in mental health issues and trained in Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
People seek therapy for a variety of reasons. Some seek personal growth or are struggling with addictions, depression, anxiety or relationship issues etc. People are individuals who respond in their own particular way to therapy. I work collaboratively with my clients and utilize various therapy techniques depending on their needs. One of the most important factors in therapy is having a positive therapeutic relationship where trust can be formed and the person feels validated.

I’ve helped thousands of clients cope with depression, anxiety, illness and relationships for over 25 years. I use cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic and family systems therapies, but am flexible and personalize my approach for the specific situation and client needs. I work with individuals, families and couples, combining support, insight, cognitive and relaxation/imagery techniques. Trained as an undergraduate at Penn State, and at University of Texas at Austin for my masters, I’ve supervised and managed many psychotherapists at hospitals and mental health agencies.

It has been my privilege for the last 30 years in assisting my clients in resolving a variety of challenges - anxiety, depression, unresolved grief, unresolved trauma (both childhood and adult), marital problems and divorce recovery. Often when faulty learning (i.e., Stinkin' Thinkin') results from traumatic events or unhealthy relationships, effective help requires applying psychological, social and spiritual resources.

In my 19 years as a therapist, I have worked with a range of clients, such as co-dependency, anger, OCD, phobias, panic disorders, and PTSD & trauma with individuals, couples, and families, and I have learned every client is vastly different. One thing that is the same is that the goal for the client is always moving towards living kind of the life they want to live. What that looks like is different for everyone because we all have our own set of values. But the stronger our values, the harder it can be to accept ourselves and others in the world. I help clients find that balance for themselves!

I am dedicated to helping people with stressors in all aspects of their relationships. I believe individuals and families come into therapy with a great deal of strength to help themselves and each other. I see my job as helping people to unlock these strengths, see what patterns have blocked them from seeing them, and find ways to use them more effectively to realize their goals. I work to help people get as much joy as possible from their relationships and from their lives in general.

As an oncology social worker, my clinical expertise relates to helping individuals maximize coping and management of cancer and other chronic illnesses. Every person brings unique characteristics to dealing with illness, so we'll look together for your inner sources of strength to help to find your own best way of coping. We'll work together to find ways to minimize the internal and external stressors that accompany illness, using a strengths-based foundation. Because illness affects the entire family, I work with patients, caregivers and children of patients in individual, couple and family sessions.

If you would like to resolve longstanding feelings of depression and anxiety, feelings of loss, the symptoms of trauma, or a tendency to repeat the same problems in relationships, you may have found that time-limited, symptom-focused therapy hasn't relieved your suffering. Perhaps it has even discouraged you from thinking you can find a lasting solution to your problems. You may feel hopeless about being able to stop what seems like a repeating series of crises, feeling resigned to suffer or cope with difficulty.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
