As a teacher and scientist, as well as a therapist, I use cutting-edge, evidence-based approaches and integrate dialectical behavior therapy skills with an exploration-focused, psychodynamic approach.
I offer evidence-based psychotherapy for people navigating relationship challenges, self-harm, thoughts of suicide, and issues with their sense of self, self-esteem, or personality. I also specialize in borderline personality disorder (BPD). I often work with individuals who have felt misunderstood by others in their life or who have struggled to find ways to communicate their needs or feelings in healthy ways to those close to them. If you have had this experience, perhaps I can help.

Therapy is only as good as the relationship between therapist and client. I provide a space for the client to explore their vulnerabilities, hopes, challenges and meet them with unconditional positive regard, empathy, and an environment where growth can occur. The human experience is universal and yet it is as unique as each individual human. Culture, family background, and one’s own personal circumstances directly inform a client’s worldview. I work closely with those struggling to manage the stress of daily life and those experiencing challenges related to anxiety, depression, disordered eating, trauma, and relational challenges.

In the past 11 years, I have had the privilege of working with individuals and families in a therapeutic partnership. Making the decision to focus on oneself and start working with a therapist can be life-changing and I applaud you for taking the time to focus on yourself. Therapy can be enlightening and help create positive and lasting changes. But it can also be intimidating when starting this process. This is why the therapeutic relationship is so important. As a therapist, it is my goal to work with you to help you unlock your greatness and move past any barriers that are holding you back.

Are you having a hard time managing your emotions or thoughts? Perhaps the combination of personal and systemic stressors is making life more challenging. Navigating America as a person of color and/or first-generation identity can be particularly tough, putting your authentic self to the test. This may be affecting your capacity to focus on work, relationships, or daily tasks. Amidst these challenges, it's important to feel understood and seen. You deserve a nurturing and inclusive space where you can express or discover your needs and desires to be your best self.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
