I am offering telehealth sessions through Therapy Notes, and Spruce platforms. We are living in some challenging times today and many people are struggling with dealing with these issues that we face today. Several of these challenges are affecting us in several ways directly and indirectly.

Depression and anxiety can be overwhelming. Both can stem from work stress, relationship difficulties, trauma, or a biological predisposition. The overall goal is straightforward: gaining control of your emotions and not letting them control you.

Sometimes thoughts and feelings can interfere with our daily activities. While we cannot change the past, we can take positive actions in the present to guide us into the future. I work with children, teens, and adults to help them identify and remove negative thoughts, feelings, and attitudes that act as obstacles to a healthy, happy, and fulfilling life. My aim is to develop a trusting relationship in order to explore life events that may be negatively impacting us and find ways to adapt, change, or accept those events.

Life can be hard at times. Anxiety, depression, stress, strained relationships, and low self-esteem can be debilitating. Sometimes we might try to put on a brave face and push away feelings, only to increase our sense of isolation. Feeling alone can make these feelings even worse and decrease our self-worth. Therapy takes many forms and looks different for everyone. I strive to provide a unique space for all of my clients. We will uncover issues around self-doubt, perfectionism, feeling like a failure, and indecision while working to increase self-compassion and empathy.

Ambivalence, uncertainty, hesitation, and frustration are natural and normal experiences as we contemplate and/or pursue change. As a result, many of us will experience discouraging thoughts and feelings and perhaps underestimate our ability to pursue meaningful change. The fortunate reality is that we're not alone...that those thoughts, feelings, and beliefs can and do change as we keep at it, skillfully negotiating the inevitable setbacks and celebrating the transformational moments of progress along the way. I look forward to being by your side to identify, plot, and navigate your unique journey.

These are not easy times. Stress, anxiety, and depression abound. Our quality of life is often challenged by interpersonal and psychological conflicts, economic and work related demands, technological changes, and a culture too often encouraging distraction and superficial quick fixes. A quality therapy experience must be tailored to helping people better understand their specific problems and develop substantive ways of dealing with them. The therapeutic environment needs to insure safety, support, encouragement, and quality feedback. This may include, when needed, educational information that can improve how we respond & communicate effectively with others.

The most important aspect of counseling is to have a safe place to express what is causing you emotional discomfort. No two people are alike. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I customize my approach to fit you and your specific needs. The focus of my practice is working with adults (18 and up). Let’s work together to get to the root of the problem.

I believe that listening is crucial in counseling; listening not just to words, but also for feelings. Sometimes people seek therapy to clarify their thoughts and emotions; or they may be looking for specific strategies to find relief from worry or sadness, or for help with a relationship. My experience and training in multiple modes of psychotherapy allows me to help people with these concerns. While starting counseling may seem scary, it can be the first step toward feeling happier and less worried.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
