We face so many important life challenges- uncertainty, parenting struggles, loss, life transitions or falling "out of sync" with a partner or spouse, to name a few. I provide a safe, warm, and non-judgmental environment for individuals and couples to feel heard and understood and to work towards desired changes. We'll collaborate to help you reduce your levels of stress, anxiety and/or depression, identifying and activating previously unrecognized strengths. I will challenge self-beliefs about your limitations, as well as other negative thoughts, so you can achieve a higher level of functioning and greater emotional freedom.

Do you feel more stressed than you feel is ok? Do tears fall easily and seemingly without cause? These have been extraordinary times and we know that everyone is struggling to find their way. We want to feel better, but we aren’t sure how to do that. Helping people learn to manage feelings and emotions offers a kind of strength and power that we all deserve. It is achievable to feel like you can handle all that life will throw at you. During the span of my 30 year career, I have treated adolescents, young adults, and adults for issues related to mood disorders as well as life transitions and parenting struggles.

I was a preschool teacher in a parent cooperative school for 25 years early in my career.
Most of the families or individuals coming to me over the years have hit a rough patch of circumstances --- or a life cycle period that presents challenges for them.

Life is an unpredictable journey. Individuals are confronted with difficult challenges, decisions and obstacles; a pandemic, a divorce, a terminal illness, racial inequality or gender bias. Other events, which may be welcomed, may also be challenging: a promotion, a marriage, a baby. With change comes transitions and new roles; parent, caregiver, victim, divorcee. Covid clarified that illness, loss and grief may cause psychological pain or trauma. Trauma is when the unbelievable occurs. It leaves victims in a world which simultaneously looks familiar and unfamiliar. Individuals may feel paralyzed, anxious or exhausted.

Maybe you’re struggling to communicate with your partner, are overwhelmed with parenting your children, or need help sustaining emotional connections.
My ideal client would be willing to work with me systemically, meaning someone willing to look beyond themselves and think, “Why is this happening?” instead of just thinking they are the problem. For example, if someone is coming in to work on depression and anxiety, my ideal client would be willing to explore the underlying issues contributing to the depression and anxiety instead of someone who is only looking for coping skills and such.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
