When I think about what life is about, I always come to the same conclusion: relationships. These relationships—whether familial, platonic, romantic, or even with ourselves—cannot help but influence every aspect of our lives. As a therapist, I help clients not only maintain but also strengthen and enforce their relationships; I draw from a systemic lens that utilizes Narrative and Solution-focused approaches.

I am narrative and solution-focused at heart.
Whether the client in front of me is one person or a couple, I look forward to the opportunity to help people feel heard and validated. Helping people identify and express their needs is a favorite part of the therapeutic process. From there, people can begin to identify and set the boundaries they need, leading them to feel empowered within their relationships. My wish is to give clients the opportunity to identify and communicate their needs, set boundaries, and live the life they'd prefer without others' expectations or limitations. I love to watch the transformation as clients live in a way that allows them to feel confident.

I would use a combination of DBT and narrative therapy to assist the client through discussed goals.
The ideal client is struggling with boundaries and stress management as they've begun caring for an aging parent while transitioning into a new career while maintaining a healthy marriage and sense of self. Caring for a parent comes with many experiences and emotions, as we can unexpectedly fall into the arena of grief and life as we know it. Maintaining healthy boundaries is an essential piece to effective communication and clarity.

As a clinician with experience working with varied populations, I believe that while we are all impacted by trauma, we have the ability to change our narrative and break negative cycles that impact wellness.
As a queer therapist, I work through a client-centered, trauma-informed lens to build therapeutic rapport. I believe that prioritizing one's mental health is essential. I strive to empower clients to take up space and view their self-care as a priority, rather than a luxury.

Psychology is my second career (after working as an author and book editor for several years), and so I am familiar with what it's like to consider major life transitions. I can help if you are feeling stuck or pondering a change in your life. Because I am a writer, I believe in the power of narrative and often incorporate this into therapy, including expressive writing and other creative approaches. I will help you look at your life as your own story and figure out how you can write the next chapter.

It is my belief that through exploration and collaboration, your life can change for the better. "Courage doesn't happen when you have all the answers. It happens when you are ready to face the questions you have been avoiding your whole life." ~ Shannon L. Alder. I enjoy working closely with people and I am honored when they share their lives with me. I've spent my entire career walking with people through difficult times, mental illness and the challenges associated with parenting today's youth.

Narrative Therapists

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds—perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
