When an individual or couple feels that the marriage cannot be repaired, therapy can help adults and children cope with the family changes that accompany separation and divorce.
Are you struggling with important relationships in your life, whether with a spouse, a parent, a friend, a coworker? We operate in a world filled with interpersonal interactions. Our earliest relationships teach us how to relate to others. However, at times, how we learn to relate during our formative years does not promote success in current relationships. I view therapy as a wonderful opportunity to examine how we relate to others and consider how to make changes in order to be more effective and have more satisfying relationships.

Have an amicable separation/ divorce.
Relationships are hard. Feeling like you & your partner are too busy, with no time for each other. That you've grown apart, almost like roommates. Intimacy barely existent. Having the same, unresolved arguments. Uncertain about where your relationship stands. Divorce keeps popping up in your mind. Feel like you keep swiping -- dating scene feels defeating. Looking for hope, a new route for your relationship(s) - rebuilding, reconnecting or separating/ divorce or an open relationship. It's scary to embark on individual or couple's therapy, sharing all of this with a stranger, but you're ready to work & create change.

I have served as a consultant for, advocated for and treated children in divorce and abuse situations-including legal, court, DCP&P and family issues.
In understanding that individuals in pain or having a particular challenge in life may make only one attempt at reaching out for help, I strive to welcome and set at ease every one who contacts me. Most therapy patients are ordinary people that have hit a bump in the road of life and cannot get past it on their own. My commitment, through goal directed therapy, is to help those people return to their optimal level of coping with the sometimes mild, sometimes severe challenges that life brings their way and guide them back to a sense of well being.

I believe that the success of therapy lies within the therapeutic relationship. As a psychologist I know that therapy can be an anxiety producing process, therefore I do my best to make my patients feel comfortable. I am very interactive and I often ask questions and offer suggestions. My ideal client is a child, adolescent, or adult that is experiencing anxiety; either generalized or concerning a specific issue. I work within a cognitive behavioral modality, offering ways to empower patients to help themselves cope with their symptoms of anxiety. I specialize in helping patients deal with anxiety, depression or life changes such as divorce.

Divorce Therapists

How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?

Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.

What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?

There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioral, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.

When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?

When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.

How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
