Are you feeling like you'll never feel better? Anxiety and stress can be vicious self-feeding cycles that can build very rapidly unless we know ways to work with them. With over 20 years experience, I've helped many people feel less anxious & overwhelmed so they can sleep better, work more confidently, & live from a more joyful place. And, I truly believe that asking for help isn’t a weakness at all, it’s actually a sign of strength. I offer an integrative approach to my counseling sessions for those who are looking for a more holistic, encompassing approach where I can blend in energy techniques & spirituality, if desired.

With over 25 years working in the mental health field, I have found that a compassionate, empathetic approach is a necessity when providing therapy. Seeking therapy can be very challenging; one has usually endured a great amount of hardship or discomfort before even making the decision to seek help. A significant aspect to therapy is that to be truly effective, a person must feel comfortable with their therapist and build considerable trust to help facilitate their healing. My goal is to find the best approach that will work for you, maximizing the benefit you will receive in therapy.

My philosophy of therapy and change is that change comes from within. As a therapist, I ask a great deal in asking an individual to change, as change is an incredibly difficult task for everyone. The journey of change requires both the client and myself to work collaboratively throughout this journey. It is for this reason that the rapport between the client and myself is critical. I aim to provide all my clients with the space to explore their underlying feelings, thoughts, and behaviors so that they can engage in change.

Kate brings a wealth of experience and commitment to facilitate healing through trauma-informed care. Her professional journey is rooted in the belief that true well-being extends beyond traditional therapeutic modalities, emphasizing a holistic and integrative approach. One distinctive aspect of Kate’s therapeutic approach is the integration of somatic, body-based interventions. These interventions assist clients in learning how to connect their feelings to the sensations they experience in their bodies. Somatic therapies develop stronger self-awareness and coping skills to manage the challenges that come with life.

My slogan is The Courage to Change, The Strength to Heal. I believe that counseling is a journey of self-discovery in which the therapist and client work together to explore the client's current state of physical, mental, and emotional well being. Another important aspect of my work is the exploration of ineffective behaviors and patterns that are no longer useful to the client's well being. Many of these patterns are rooted in the person's past, and I believe that most people need to visit the past in order to fully understand why the things, feel, and behave the way they do.

I see my clients as unique individuals, as I am a firm believer of meeting a client where they currently are and working together on exploring their needs and goals. Life is always changing, these changes, whether anticipated or not, can often create uncomfortable and confusing thoughts and emotions, leaving us feeling overwhelmed and emotionally vulnerable. Making the decision to start therapy is the first step in what can be a very difficult and scary decision to make. I provide a safe and comfortable environment to help each patient gain a better understanding of their needs and finding their full potential.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
