It can be difficult to make the strong and often necessary choice to begin therapy. By taking the time to look through these profiles, you are starting the process of feeling at home and connected to yourself again-or for the first time. You may be experiencing a difficult transition, having relationship challenges with your significant other, children or peers. Perhaps you are not feeling like yourself, or able to feel the joy you once felt, experiencing feelings of low self-worth or frustrated with the way things are right now and it is time to make a change.

With 17+ years experience providing mental health support to children and adolescents, my primary goal is to foster a safe and trusting environment where your child can thrive and develop their emotional well-being. I understand that entrusting your child's mental health to someone else can be a challenging decision. However, I want to assure you that my approach to counseling is rooted in empathy, compassion, and a genuine commitment to your child's growth. By creating a non-judgmental and supportive space, I strive to establish a therapeutic relationship that encourages open communication, active listening, and collaboration.

You potentially accomplished the hardest part of seeking guidance; asking for help. I understand that it is not easy and at times, can be intimidating. Working on bettering ourselves is an ever-changing process, where the journey can be beautiful if we allow it to be. My approach as a therapist is to assist clients in gaining insight, change negative patterns and behaviors, and desire to obtain self-fulfillment.

I also run trauma groups for men and women; separately.
Trauma is often the root of our struggles. Childhood and adult trauma can leave visible and invisible marks on our bodies and souls. These marks show up in our relationships, our parenting, and our physical health, among other places. It takes bravery to face the feelings that trauma brings up within us. I tailor my techniques and connections to the individual needs of each person who walks through my door because not one of us can, or should, be boxed into a category. I specialize in working with adults; individuals, couples, and families.

Jeri Mentor, LPC, LCADC, NCC Life can be challenging. Sometimes it does not go the way we plan it and other times changes occur leaving us to feel helpless, hopeless and disempowering. However, seeking help is empowering. Whether you are experiencing depressive symptoms, substance use, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, ADD, or just feeling stuck; you have made the right decision to end the cycle. By ending the cycle, you will find you, your identity and your purpose. My goal in therapy is to establish a rapport and connect with you. Once established, it will be easier to identify triggers that led to these symptoms.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
