Carl Jung once said "Im not what happened to me, I'm what I choose to become". Life produces circumstances which weigh one down, cause a sense of burden, oppression, even feelings of guilt and shame. Here at Take Courage Counseling the journey is a gentle and a secure passage towards empowerment, security, and insight into the matters which we once allowed to take our power.

We often realize that there are areas in our lives in which we know there has to be better, however we feel overwhelmed, stressed, and even uncapable of overcoming those situations that weigh us down and stop us from being the best version of ourselves. Doubt, anxiety, emotional discomfort and negative thoughts begin to surface our mind and become a part of who we are and we accept it. However, we were never created to survive we are created to succeed. It is ok to say "I need help". It is time to take our lives back and live the way it's meant to be lived. We are all learning to become a better person day by day. Today is your day!

Life has its bright moments, but it can also have its dark side. When you find yourself spending more time in the dark times than the bright times, it's time to come and see a therapist. I can help you come back into the brightness of life and teach you how to spend most of your time there.

I believe life is directed and driven from our innermost being. I believe our hopes, desires, and our actions are motivated from within. Many times those motivations are difficult to see, explain, or to understand. This can leave us with questions as to why life doesn't seem to work for us. Why do we carryout unproductive behaviors and maintain unproductive relationships. Lets explore together the why, and consider alternative ways to approach life.

Life can be pretty difficult at times; however, therapy provides an opportunity to find utility in strategies for negotiating stress. With over 10 years of clinical experience, I strive to provide both evidence based and culturally competent treatment for a wide range of individuals. Additionally, I incorporate salient aspects of current research while also considering the impact of culture (i.e., race, gender, ability, spirituality, sexual orientation). We will work collaboratively towards accomplishing your goals for treatment while also exploring individualized factors connected to the objectives.

There are times in life when we encounter pressures and difficulties that not only challenge our ability to cope and adapt in healthy and effective ways, but that also leave us feeling either out of touch with, and/or out of alignment with our truest, most authentic selves. Our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health and well-being can often suffer as a result. As a licensed clinical psychologist with specialized training and expertise in treating issues related to physical health and spirituality, I am deeply passionate about providing evidenced-based psychotherapy that respects and honors the whole person.

Other common areas I work in are grief, relationships, self esteem, spirituality, and LGBTQ+.
My personality is very calm and supportive. I like to create a space that is free from judgment and I keep an open mind for whatever you would like to bring to therapy. My approach is very empathetic and encouraging. It is my hope that you will feel like I am on this journey with you, as a guide and source of support. I will offer validation and comfort, but will challenge you when it’s needed. I enjoy working with people who know they need a change, and are open to the challenge of taking on this change. Just know that you will not have to do it alone.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
