Have you been trying to accomplish something for a long time ...and it's not happening? You want to be at a different place in your life than you are. Even though you think about it over and over again; with feelings of frustration, anger or depression, it's hard to get motivated. We all feel stuck at times in our life. It can be an important time for you to think about things in a new way. It's a wonderful time to consider being in therapy. You can gain new understanding which will bring about change.

I utilize a mix of humor and empathy in sessions, and focus on empowering my clients. I use only evidence-based interventions, and I take my clients' lead as to whether they prefer a more passive, listening approach or if they want to set goals. I can assign weekly tasks to achieve goals or take a less active approach. I am licensed in New York and New Jersey with 17 years of experience helping adults and adolescents with depression, stress and anxiety, coping with addictions, motivation, self esteem, confidence, and bipolar disorder, among other conditions.

Psychotherapy is a practice of deep listening and a process that provides the opportunity for growth and self-discovery. Therapy can help you feel connected, grounded and deeply understood; it facilitates the opportunity to work through current and older challenges, which are impacting you (and possibly your loved ones) in the present. My style is holistic, eclectic and relational. I provide a safe environment, listen deeply and engage genuinely with the individuals, couples and families I meet. I believe that we each possess the innate ability to transform our lives so we can flourish, create, connect, accept and thrive.

The complexities of our worlds create numerous opportunities for stress to overwhelm us. All stressors, regardless of intensity, can leave us feeling powerless and hopeless as they accumulate. This is especially true for children and adolescents, who are more susceptible to experiencing negative emotions. My role as a therapist is to help individuals identify their stressors, understand how these stressors impact their overall well-being, and learn how to heal.

REGARDING COVID 19: We have to find ways to cope without lots of the things we normally rely on (going out with friends, going to the gym, 12-step meetings, religious services, etc.). Tele-therapy can really help you to cope while you’re social-distancing in your home. If you don’t have insurance, we can discuss a reasonable fee you can afford, based on a sliding scale.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
