You have a toolbox. You have been using it all of your life. I will help you identify the tools that have been working for you, manage the ones that are not, and develop new ones for your new and emerging chapter. I will help you to gain insight, confidence, and character. This part of you is there right now and it always has been. It is just blocked by any combination of stress, trauma, grief, pain, etc. I will work with you break through that blockage so that you can emerge as the rockstar that you are.

It is not a label; it is a universal emotion that does not only apply to mental illness.
Currently, I work with clients who desire to be full participants in their own health and healing process. My clients are "seekers" by nature -- often on a spiritual quest. Many of my clients have already had years of previous therapy. They do not come to me to work on a "problem." They come to understand their role in the problem, to resolve it, and to learn from it. My "typical" client is someone who wants to transform suffering into meaning and bring purpose to it. Many of my clients are interested in using narrative or storytelling to tell or "rewrite" the stories of their lives.

We all have the potential to feel better than we do, even when life seems alright on the surface. But if you're here, chances are something hasn’t felt quite right for a while. The good news is, that can change, and often more easily than you expect. Our bodies have an incredible, natural ability to heal, and by tapping into that innate wisdom, we can navigate challenges, process difficult experiences, and move towards a deeper sense of well-being.

Finding a therapist can be an overwhelming task. You don't want to pick some name off a list. If you are looking for help, you might feel at the end of your rope, you don't know what else to do, like nobody understands or "gets" you, or that you need some simple guidance. We can help. Therapy isn't magic. Most people intellectually know what they need to do, they just need guidance, encouragement, or new skills to get there.

Do you have a nagging voice inside that is wondering when you will make YOU a priority? Engaging in therapy can bring clarity, growth, understanding, and change. Starting the process though is nerve wracking & overwhelming. I work with clients to create a nurturing, non-judgmental environment where you can express your "unedited" self, learn new skills, and build better relationships(with yourself too!). While this learning can occur independently with the use of self-help tools, working collaboratively with a therapist can make the journey toward change faster, less isolating, and even sometimes a bit fun.

Hi, I'm Derik Moore, LCSW. I worked as a psychotherapist and clinical supervisor for 10 years in the community mental health realm prior to establishing my own practice. I began my career working with those living with HIV as an activist in the mid-1990s in Newark and New Brunswick, NJ, where I engaged in street outreach and advocated for a harm reduction approach. This work informed my commitment to public health and to exploring how economic and sociological factors play significant roles in the ways we move through the world. I have also been a musician for nearly 40 years and offer virtual and in-person drum lessons.

My ideal client believes the following: If you stay the course and you believe in yourself, take it one day at a time. There is going to be a light at the end of the tunnel. I believe we can learn coping skills that will enable us to follow our path and to find a more resilient and fulfilling life.

I am passionate about working with women who are navigating a major life transition but are finding themselves exhausted by their inner critic, judging themselves to the point of being stuck and shut down from their creative expression. I value your internal sense of self as a significant resource to help alleviate your symptoms. Many women I see are looking for an alternative to traditional talk therapy. My comprehensive training in psychotherapy and art therapy brings a unique element to my sessions in which we access and utilize your creativity to help problem solve and gain a fresh, new perspective.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
