Are you having a hard time managing your emotions or thoughts? Perhaps the combination of personal and systemic stressors is making life more challenging. Navigating America as a person of color and/or first-generation identity can be particularly tough, putting your authentic self to the test. This may be affecting your capacity to focus on work, relationships, or daily tasks. Amidst these challenges, it's important to feel understood and seen. You deserve a nurturing and inclusive space where you can express or discover your needs and desires to be your best self.

We are humans of connection and our development can be burdened by the moments of disengagement. I truly believe in the ability of the individual. Many of the obstacles in our lives are either created or transformed by the circles we hold. From the family you may have to the one you may have come from, from the friends in your surrounding, to the partner you share your life with. We attract what we are and success is greatest when achieved together. Life can be like a bucket under a dripping ceiling, it can withstand a lot, but eventually overflows.

I provide a safe place with an empathetic listening ear to empower people to make the necessary changes to find inner peace and improve their relationships and quality of life. I encourage people to use self-care and relaxation techniques, healthy boundaries, and practical changes to improve their relationship with themselves and others. With this comes improved emotional and psychological well-being while recovering from trauma, and stress, and working through life transitions and family conflict.

Welcome all! I have been working in the mental health field for several years and one of the most important factors in whether therapy succeeds or fails is the goal of each party in session. As a therapist, my goal is to understand where you are going and where you have been. Together we can create a roadmap to success — that looks different for each person. I am here to focus on the needs of each client and help people feel heard so that each individual can focus on the best version of themselves.

How we perceive something will directly impact our emotional and behavioral responses. Learning to understand the process of perception will offer ongoing opportunities for an individual to enact change in his or her life. In my practice, I draw from my intensive training in both Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to teach these fundamental skills to clients and help them to achieve their goals.

In the past 11 years, I have had the privilege of working with individuals and families in a therapeutic partnership. Making the decision to focus on oneself and start working with a therapist can be life-changing and I applaud you for taking the time to focus on yourself. Therapy can be enlightening and help create positive and lasting changes. But it can also be intimidating when starting this process. This is why the therapeutic relationship is so important. As a therapist, it is my goal to work with you to help you unlock your greatness and move past any barriers that are holding you back.

I believe that the most important aspect of counseling is a positive therapeutic relationship based upon trust, safety, empathy and understanding. In creating such a therapeutic relationship, I employ a person-centered approach designed to give you the power to heal your own life. This is based upon the idea that you are the biggest expert in your life and that I am here to help you uncover the solutions to the issues that are troubling you. I will provide you with unconditional positive regard, which means that we will establish a therapeutic relationship built on understanding, trust, and confidence.

I would describe my therapy style as eclectic. I collaborate with my clients to develop a strong therapeutic alliance. A balance between empathy, connection, and compassion is my approach to working with my clients. I want them to trust me and consider our time to feel safe and calm. I have worked for adult inpatient addiction programs, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient settings specifically applying Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Cognitive Behavior Therapy strategies.

I strive to create an open, client-centered, and non-judgmental space for clients to explore their needs, challenges, and behaviors. I utilize a variety of modalities and interventions to help clients understand the connection between the past, present, and future, with the ultimate goal of creating a future that is meaningful and fulfilling. I have provided psychotherapeutic services to adults in inpatient and outpatient settings. These experiences allowed me to work with clients from different backgrounds, belief systems, and orientations to better understand the unique and shared experiences that are part of the human condition.

I believe our minds have the capability and desire for healing; the therapeutic relationship is key to open the door for growth to begin. Over time, the client becomes more in tune with themselves, their patterns, behaviors, and ways they would like to improve their life. Together with the client, we discover tools that empower them to become their best selves using both evidenced-based strategies and an understanding of their unique self.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
