It has been my professional privilege over the last 25 years to provide counseling to married couples, families and individuals who were struggling with various relationship challenges, personal crisis and family conflicts. I have also had to opportunity to provide extensive one on one personal counseling to many individuals who were struggling with depression, general anxiety, grief, anger issues, abusive relationships, sexual assault, and personal trauma. Many of these clients were wonderfully helped, healed, given new hope and were taught new relationship survival and coping skills that they are now able to use to enhance their relationships and personal lives.

Intention is the starting point for meaningful change and psychotherapy can be the vehicle that can help you get there. Intentions for positive change involve considering both directions, the past and future. Unresolved emotional pain- the proverbial ghosts of the past- have a negative effect on well-being and can manifest in ways that limit your life whether you are suffering from depression and anxiety, addictive illness, or have relationship issues. Developing insight along with learning positive coping skills is a powerful approach to working through core emotional issues and problematic patterns that keep you stuck.

I treat grief, loss, adjustment and transition issues, trauma, anxiety, depression, and gender and sexual identity concerns, among other issues.
Psychology is my second career (after working as an author and book editor for several years), and so I am familiar with what it's like to consider major life transitions. I can help if you are feeling stuck or pondering a change in your life. Because I am a writer, I believe in the power of narrative and often incorporate this into therapy, including expressive writing and other creative approaches. I will help you look at your life as your own story and figure out how you can write the next chapter.

Stress, anxiety, and depression, and other mental illnesses impact physical health, relationships with our loved ones, and affect work performance. Each of individual experiences and copes with challenges differently. We perceive, process and react though the unique lens of personal history, present day experience and unique physiology. Therapy helps to clarify the "building blocks" of the unique lens through which we perceive our world. Therapy then helps us make conscious and change aspects of the lens that contribute to our difficulties and distress, so that we can create health and wholeness in ourselves and our relationships.

This is a deeper process of understanding what is difficult in dealing with feelings like depression, anxiety, loneliness, anger.
If painful experiences were met with confusing or anxious responses from others or described in manners that did not respond to emotional needs, then a child or individual would likely cope with difficulties by disconnecting from the threatening emotional meanings. We need another at times, or search for a healing process. If you have been struggling with strong feelings or a particular situation, it is time to get help. You can find the way through fears, loss or other struggles. I am here to support you through your struggles, through personal hardships, finding truths or make sense of confusion in your mind or life.

I work well with insightful clients dealing with anxiety, loss, relationship issues, trauma, or troublesome behaviors.
Have you been trying to make a change, but feeling stuck? Maybe that job you're in is no longer inspiring, your relationship is no longer fulfilling, or there's a behavior or a habit you just wish you could stop. Trying to make these kinds of changes alone is frustrating, and often leaves us spinning our wheels, but stuck in that same place we know so well. If you sometimes find yourself overthinking, repeating old patterns, and/or getting caught up in self-criticism, you're not alone! Having a warm, compassionate, nonjudgmental, skilled therapist can help you remember your inherent strengths, and regain the balance you seek.

I understand that a child who struggles at home or school with strong emotions or behavioral challenges, requires a lot of time and attention, seems angry, withdrawn, sensitive, or just doesn’t seem themselves, may leave a parent feeling frustrated, worried and exhausted. You want your child to do well and be happy, but you're unsure what will help. It can be difficult to find the right resources to address: low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, behavioral outbursts, and difficulty maintaining positive relationships. I specialize in working with children ages 3+ to improve functioning and establish healthy family connection.
