I am EMDR trained and am certified in DBT and have experience working with survivors of childhood abuse and sexual assault.
"How did I get here?" It's a question many of us have asked ourselves in the course of our lives. Sometimes "here" is a frustrating, sad, or even scary place. The question we may ask ourselves is, "How do I get to where I want to be?" Sometimes the answer lies in a place where we can receive nonjudgmental feedback and guidance to help us on our journey. I am passionate about helping people get to the place they want to be in their lives-wherever that might be.

I take a mindfulness based approach utilizing a combination of Somatic Experiencing (SE), Dialectical Behavior Therapy ( DBT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT).
I'm Dorothy and my pronouns are she/her. I have an anti-racist, queer-affirming, inclusive therapy practice. I practice from a client centered strengths based focus - we are all just humans trying to figure out how to navigate life. My therapy style is a combination of understanding and validating causes and developing a plan to cope and build a life that you experience as worth living.

I utilize a mindfulness-based approach and am intensively trained in dialectical behavior therapy ( DBT).
Often when we struggle, we are having a normal reaction to abnormal circumstances. The world we live in can feel unsupportive of just how hard it is to be a human. I feel it is a privilege to help my clients realize their innate wholeness and courage and I approach the therapy relationship with a genuine, compassionate, and non-judgmental style. I work best with clients who are struggling with the impact of trauma, emotion dysregulation, dissociation, self injury, depression, anxiety, and issues specific to the LGBTQIA+ population.

I’m intensively trained in DBT, Brainspotting 1 and 2, and perinatal mental health through PSI.
You’re an empathic, sensitive and creative woman who is finally ready to motivate and find meaning, but stuck in a negative spiral and struggling with emotions. Many creative and empathic women struggle with highly sensitive temperaments and appear typical on the outside but often feel like a hot mess and struggle in their relationships, parenting, careers, health. We can’t get rid of emotions, nor do we want to! It’s what makes us human! Anyone can benefit from learning ways to better regulate or express emotions. Anxiety and emotions can suck, but I can help you cope better.

I have completed trainings in multiple intervention styles to include the Gottman Method for Couples Therapy (Level One) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy ( DBT) which I implement to help clients learn tangible skills while fostering the insight needed to create meaningful, long-term growth.
I'm a therapist who specializes in working with relationships and individuals with relationship-based challenges. I work to help relationships and individuals eliminate the barriers interfering with finding intimacy, connection, and validation within their relationships. My primary focus is to help clients identify their stuck points and to help them find opportunities to make changes in favor of meeting their goals. I find that success begins with creating a safe and non-judgmental environment where clients can share their challenges and goals to identify where they are at and how I can best meet their specific needs.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
