I invite you to reach out to me, and together, we will ensure your child receives the support and advocacy needed to secure the learning accommodations they deserve.
Do you have a child who needs extra time on in-class exams, the SAT, ACT, or other necessary learning accommodations? Each year, countless students fall through the cracks and find that their school is unable or unwilling to provide the necessary psychoeducational evaluations and support. The implications are profound, as these students, through no fault of their own, are denied vital accommodations like extra time in the classroom and on standardized tests.

Are you struggling in the workplace and/or with your relationships ? I am a skilled licensed psychologist and I work with children and adults within the context of their families. I treat anxiety, depression, phobias, OCD , mood disorders and learning disabilities, and often use cognitive behavioral interventions such as systematic desensitization. My background in School Psychology has sensitized me to the impact that cognitive limitations, learning disabilities, ADHD and spectrum disorders have on day to day functioning in adulthood, where the most typical presenting problems are Anxiety, Depression, and Relationship issues.

Effective counseling, like effective parenting and teaching, involves understanding where someone is at in their growth process and providing them with a safe space and the supports essential to move to the next level. Developmentalists refer to this as "scaffolding". Like scaffolding for a building, these external supports are specific and put in place to allow for expansion and strengthening. Now, think about your favorite mentor or coach. It is likely that they provided support and encouragement that was a good match for you. As a counselor, I provide these supports, assisting my clients in reaching their greatest potential.

To parents, their children are the most important part of their lives. No one wants to see their child struggle. Navigating the difficult years from preteen to adolescent to young adult can be a daunting task. In my work with young people, I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help work through issues related to emotional difficulties, academic struggles, and behavioral problems. CBT focuses on learning new ways to think, feel, and behave and addresses pressing issues. As treatment progresses, I want patients to feel more able to utilize new strategies and skills while improving the quality of their life, education, relationships, and experiences.

We sometimes need help navigating life's challenges, whether they occur at home, in school, or in the workplace. Other times you just need someone to listen. Resolving adversity requires trust, resilience and coping mechanisms. Learning to identify triggers and stressors, focus on strengths, and work collaboratively to address concerns in a safe and judgement-free space, can help to produce positive change.

In addition, as a past school administrator, I consult with parents and students in relation to learning and behavioral issues as well as interfacing with school personnel, as needed.
I begin the collaboration with each person seeking my professional counsel by asking, "What is it you're not getting in your life that causes you pain?" Together, we explore the resources that will allow them to heal, change and grow. During the 30 years I have practiced psychotherapy, from a systemic or holistic perspective, I have assisted individuals, parents, couples, adolescents and caregivers to see and experience their lives differently.

My work focuses on many different concerns, including anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, loss, trauma, complex family issues, body image, giftedness, and the intersection of learning disabilities and emotional functioning.
My work as a clinical psychologist has grown out of my interest in the interplay of how we develop, what we experience, and how we make our way through our challenges. My commitment in the therapeutic process is to a thoughtful understanding of how your experiences have brought you to this point and what the underlying causes of difficulty in your life are. Through our collaboration we work in an atmosphere of respect to deepen that understanding, reduce distress, create better ways of coping, promote healing, and structure changes that allow for greater balance and the possibility of joy.

My passion is helping others. Learning how to move through problems instead of resisting them reduces uncomfortable feelings. How we respond to life determines our level of fulfillment. I help clients improve life functioning and relationships in order to reach their potential. Depression, anxiety, substance abuse, self-esteem, eating disorders, school/academic issues, and relationship turmoil can get in the way.

Education and Learning Disabilities Therapists

How effective is treatment for learning disabilities?

When initiated early and tailored to a child’s specific needs, learning disability treatment can be quite effective at helping a child cope with their disability, though its exact efficacy may depend on the severity of symptoms and whether comorbid disorders exist. Less is known about treatment initiated in adulthood, but it is certainly possible that an adult with a learning disability will see some improvement—or at the very least, identify workarounds and accommodations that could make symptoms less burdensome in day-to-day life.

When should someone seek treatment for learning disabilities?

It’s best to seek treatment as early as possible. Because learning disabilities often go unnoticed until a child starts school, or even until they’re a few years along, regular check-ins with teachers and doctors can help parents determine whether children are meeting milestones and keeping up with peers or whether an evaluation for learning disabilities may be warranted. And although earlier is always better, it’s never too late to be evaluated for learning disabilities and to seek treatment.

What happens if learning disabilities are left untreated?

Undiagnosed and untreated learning disabilities can be a source of significant frustration and shame for a child, who may feel that their challenges stem from a lack of intelligence or willpower. Such feelings can trigger low self-esteem, depression, or anxiety, which may push a child toward risky behaviors, including substance use. In adulthood, untreated learning disabilities can interfere with career success, and lingering feelings of self-doubt and shame can negatively affect someone’s mental health.

Are there medications for learning disabilities?

Currently, there are no medications designed to treat specific learning disabilities such as dysgraphia or dyscalculia. However, someone with a learning disability may be prescribed medication for a comorbid condition, such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD, which may have positive downstream effects on their learning disability; for example, a child with both ADHD and dyslexia may find that they’re better able to focus on their reading exercises after being prescribed a stimulant medication.
