I have extensive experience in both private and non- profit settings. I always do my best to meet each individual where they are and work together to set and achieve goals. Now more than ever, so many are struggling to balance all aspects of their lives and take care of their physical and mental health, but pushing this off can lead to long-term issues for your mind and body. It is never too late to begin the process of learning better self-care and prioritizing your own needs.

I elicit hope when the world seems hopeless. My approach is to develop a therapeutic relationship where authenticity is encouraged in a compassionate, judgement free space. Majority of the children I work with simply want to just be kids, but there is a concern or barrier that needs to be addressed or removed first. Majority of the youth I work with are trying to figure out their purpose and how to focus on the future. The families I work with want to reduce stress and be cohesive. The couples I work with want to be unified and feel like they are together in their relationship. The adults want to be happy and content.

Additionally, I might incorporate aspects from ACT, REBT, Family Systems, DBT, Psychoeducation, Trauma Informed Care, Reality Therapy, or Problem Solving Therapy.
Hi! I'm James. Over the last decade I’ve seen good results helping people who feel that their life just recently “fell off track” even if they did not expect therapy to be the answer. I’ve tried to nurture this niche of helping those emotionally effected by high pressure stress. I have helped individuals address low mood, depression, anxiety, and low life-satisfaction. I have also worked with children and families to expand communication skills and patterns, improve relationships, increase feelings of security, and optimize being accurately understood.

I believe everyone holds the key to their own mental and emotional wellness themselves, but at times may need help finding it. We all face challenging times and situations in our lives, and sometimes need some help getting through them. I specialize in treating individuals with anxiety, depression and life stage transitions. I also specialize in treating individuals who come from families affected by alcoholism or other dysfunctions, as well as those who are recovering from alcoholism and are already in a 12 step program.

My most extensive experiences are with people who have had issues with substance addiction, recovery, and domestic/relationship abuse. Many individuals have also had co-ocurring issues such as depression, anxiety, and trauma that create additional legal, social, and spiritual issues. Goals for therapy include recovery from addiction, better emotional and physical health, and restoring healthy family and social relationships. To me, successful therapy is about facilitating personal and professional growth and helping people to process their feelings and thoughts. In so doing, they are able to make important changes in their lives.

Reality Therapy

Is reality therapy evidence-based?

Reality therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapies. However, some research does indicate that reality therapy might be helpful for people with addiction, and may be effective in treating social anxiety in young people.

How long does reality therapy last?

Reality therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Reality therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of reality therapy long after treatment has ended.

Does reality therapy work?

Reality therapy can help a person manage concerns such as eating disorders, addiction, substance use, anxiety, phobias, and relationship difficulties. This type of therapy encourages a person to be accountable for their behaviors. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure. Reality therapy can be useful in one-on-one therapy or in group sessions. This method may be used with children, families, and adults.

What are the limitations of reality therapy?

This therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the therapist focuses on choices made by the individual in the present day. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over others. This format may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every client.
