My ideal client is someone who is willing to put in the work in the therapeutic process. The client should be able to recognize that there are changes that need to happen and are willing to do what it takes to make therapy work for them. The main issues that I work with are anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder. The goals of therapy would be to find a balance between where emotions no longer inhibit a person's ability to function on a daily basis.

How we perceive something will directly impact our emotional and behavioral responses. Learning to understand the process of perception will offer ongoing opportunities for an individual to enact change in his or her life. In my practice, I draw from my intensive training in both Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to teach these fundamental skills to clients and help them to achieve their goals.

I have often had the best success with clients seeking a symptom relief or crisis resolution, in combination with a desire to change lifestyles. Personal growth is more than learning new coping skills, requiring a commitment to self exploration and changing orientations. Breaking old patterns of thought and behavior can be accomplished via changing what we pay attention to,how we treat ourselves and others and broadening our view of the world. I focus on the life directions, passions and strengths of people. I am informed by the belief that we are all unique beings.

I take the mystery out of therapy by working collaboratively with you. My role then tends to be like a coach or instructor. We set goals together. I do not make decisions for my clients. Rather we look for patterns in thinking, actions, and relationships that cause problems. We examine the positive and negative outcomes that cause people to get stuck in negative emotions. While we look to the past to learn how patterns are shaped, this treatment is present and future focused. It is more important to build on your strengths than to dwell on weaknesses.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists
How long does OCD treatment take?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.
What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.
Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.
Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
