I take a person-centered approach to treating clients. I believe in personal responsibility and choices. I believe that change is possible and support my clients along the way. I consider myself a "fellow traveler" when sitting with clients. My job is a privilege. I am also Certified Grief Counselor with many years experience. I believe grief is a fluid process that doesn't follow "stages" and everyone's path is unique.

Have you heard the term “gaslighting"? Although a trendy psychological term, it’s a real phenomenon. Usually related to emotional abuse or "narcissistic abuse". Are you feeling depression and or anxiety? Do you feel like you’re in a codependent relationship? Do you question yourself and wonder why it's happening? Are you trying to manage a history of abuse, whether experienced during childhood or presently. Are you concerned about or have you been told you’re dealing with someone of narcissistic or borderline personality disorders?

I gravitate to working with people who think a lot, which often translated to intellectuals or perfectionists. I find meaning in supporting clients who are experiencing the effects of trauma, anxiety, overthinking, and especially children and adolescents. I believe that a warm, trusting relationship is what heals us. When we feel seen, and our voices are heard, we are able to be who we are meant to be. Once I get to understand my client's goals and desires, I am able to work together with my client to help them be their best selves.

We often hear that healing and growth is not linear. Working on ourselves and our relationships is an ongoing process with its ups and downs. Just when we think we're out of the woods, life reminds us of its unpredictability. If life is consistently inconsistent, how can we best adjust, work towards acceptance, and reduce our suffering? Our willingness to work towards self improvement can shift like the wind and when our motivation and energy dwindles, so does our trust in ourselves and those around us. As fear, anxiety, sadness, and even hopelessness settles in, tackling simple tasks seems unattainable.

Life can be full of unknowns and what-ifs. Some days you feel great while others you can barely function. Often there is no rhyme or reason to how you feel leading to confusion and frustration. Maybe you're moving through days questioning yourself and your choices leaving you exhausted. Major life transitions can spike emotions that are hard to make sense of but you do not have to figure any of it out alone. You should never settle for not being your best self! It’s time you find peace while gaining perspective.

While everyone is facing challenging times based on many circumstances that life is presenting, its important to know that you are not alone. Often times, we have difficulty coping with life stressors. That can result in becoming withdrawn, experience difficulty in relationships, or face increased anxiety. I believe that our experiences from birth, adolescents years, and into our adult life have a tremendous impact on our worldview. My approach involves collaborating with my clients to explore the impact of past experiences in order to develop the healthy coping skills needed to face life's challenges.

I am a licensed Board Certified psychotherapist, regarded as intuitive, patient and kind. My diverse professional background in combination with my lifelong dedication to guiding others through emotional challenges has informed my unique empathetic approach to psychotherapy. I understand that most issues lie deep and it takes time for clients to work them through to find lasting relief. However, others might only need short term treatment, then I will address presenting problems to offer more immediate relief. My goal is to assist each client in finding comfort, perspective, stability and strategies to resolve inner conflicts.

People's lives are shaped not as much by their experiences but rather by how they perceive their experiences. "When we change how we look at things, the things we look at change" Wayne Dyer. By expanding what is assumed, expected or believed people become able to change how they experience life. As thinking changes for the positive even challenges can be experienced as an opportunity for growth. Experience includes clinical supervisor for adolescent inpatient program, developed and coordinated adolescent partial hospital program, clinician for adult and adolescent intensive outpatient group for addiction and psychiatric issues.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists
How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?
Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.
Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?
The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
