Self transformation comes from understanding how the body and the mind have been impacted by childhood trauma. The somatic modality I practice, Core Energetics, offers a unique opportunity to unwind childhood conditioning/trauma and discover who we truly are. Anxiety has become an ever-present emotion with the things that have been happening worldwide over the last 5 years. How do we navigate life when our anxiety is at levels where it is hard to access our rational brain? Also, our childhood trauma is often times echoing in the background, through the events that are happening in the present. Why do we tend to repeat patterns?

I utilize an integrative therapeutic approach, drawing from psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and mindfulness perspectives.
Are you struggling with depression and anxiety? Using alcohol or drugs to cope? Do you find it hard to communicate your needs in your relationships? Feeling frustrated that you keep repeating the same unhealthy relationship patterns over and over again? We will work together to identify the underlying reasons for your sadness and anxiety, and resolve challenges in your relationships. Therapy can help you feel calmer, less stressed, change unhealthy relationship patterns, improve the level of trust and communication in your relationships, and lead to positive lifestyle changes.

As a psychodynamic therapist I utilise a variety of tools and techniques that I've been trained in.
We all want to feel whole and achieve meaningful goals in our lives. To do so requires honesty and dedication, especially around the insecurities and defense mechanisms that have become ingrained within our personality. I can help you zoom out to gain more familiarity with your true Self trying to break through the surface of your persona. On one hand, it can be very anxiety provoking to feel that there is more to life than this. But, at the same time, it is an invitation to know, forgive and love yourself unconditionally. An invitation to feel into unknown selves and shadows, to accept You exactly the way you really are.

After working within the Child Study team for four years and as a mental health therapist within an inpatient program for five years, I found mindfulness, CBT, DBT and psychodynamic psychotherapy are effective ways to help patients gain self-awareness and empowerment to overcome the obstacles that hold them back from their goals.
If you are feeling confused, unmotivated, distracted, or have difficulty staying on task, this can be a sign that you are experiencing a disruption and conflict within yourself that is preventing you from achieving desired goals or enjoying your current life. While we travel this path we call life, sometimes we encounter obstacles that seem like we just can’t overcome. We all have goals in life and we desire the best things for ourselves but sometimes we don't always take the right course of action for ourselves. Our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors reflect a hidden belief system within ourselves which decides our path in life.

I primarily employ a strengths-based, psychodynamic approach, but often weave in CBT, MI, mindfulness, EMDR and other tools, catered to an individual's needs.
When things aren't going well and don't seem to be getting better, when you feel alone and disconnected, stressed, not good enough, angry or ashamed, resentful, or have been deeply hurt, you naturally try to ease that discomfort, but not always in the most helpful ways. Often, problematic thought patterns and behaviors arise from natural coping mechanisms that helped you get through difficult times, but are no longer helpful and are in fact now causing greater harm. Navigating all of this can be hard and at times, overwhelming.

My approach is solution-focused and uses elements of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Psychodynamic Therapy to identify and build on your strengths.
Especially for some of the most successful among us, we can hold ourselves to the highest standards of performance in all areas. Sometimes we may feel that we're supposed to have all the answers to the challenges life throws our way, even when that isn’t always possible. An achievement focus can come at the expense of other areas of our lives. I see therapy as a collaborative experience. I work with individuals and couples to help unlock what holds them back to gain an understanding of how our histories shape our present, while building a foundation of skills in the here-in-now to promote healing and a future that is self-defined.

My approach is rooted in attachment and psychodynamic theory, exploring how past experiences, relationships, and one’s unconscious shapes their perception of the present.
Schedule a free consultation easily using this link: calendly.com/lianna-hursh These days, moving through life can feel like a performance; an enduring struggle to prove that things are not only okay, but seemingly perfect. This can feel ... exhausting. I strive to create a supportive, non-judgmental environment in which you feel comfortable putting that performance aside. I believe that we begin to heal through relationships. My hope, for our therapeutic relationship, is that you feel safe to be honest, authentic, and vulnerable about whatever your life looks like right now, while together, we reflect on what may have led you here.

My practice is influenced by psychodynamic, experiential and mindfulness-based therapies.
Frequently, people who have experienced trauma develop extraordinary survival skills. Often the strategies that were critical for survival when you were a child, thwart the ability to develop satisfying work, family and/or romantic relationships in adulthood. Psychotherapy provides an opportunity to transcend patterns that are holding you back from achieving your goals, and realizing your potential. This often includes addressing family, career, and relationship issues within the treatment as well as recognizing thinking and/or behavior which may be harmful or holding you back.

My theoretical preference is psychodynamic and person centered therapy, while utilizing mindfulness based skills.
I believe that everyone has the ability to grow and achieve their goals. Sometimes it's harder than others. I work with people who want to cultivate real change in their lives, whether that's learning to manage depression or anxiety, getting along better with other people or their partners, or helping them accomplish that career goal they desire. I believe that establishing a good connection with my clients and creating manageable and growth-oriented goals can lead to lasting positive change.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
