Beginning the therapeutic process takes courage, and can be a difficult first step to make. I believe that by using a direct approach, a safe environment is established that allows clients to process and grow. I enjoy collaborative relationships that enable clients to create and achieve desired goals.

“Life is full of ups and downs. The trick is to enjoy the ups and have courage during the downs.” Throughout our life, each of us will experience stress, trauma, or a crisis that can trigger overwhelming emotions, making us feel out of control. Even exciting occasions such as marriage, a new career, or the birth of a child, come with change and can make us feel anxious and unsure in a way we have never felt before. My goal as a therapist is to help my clients cope with and navigate these changes.

Fear lives in the head and courage lives in the heart. The job is to get from one to the other - Louise Penny. The stress and pressure for children, teens and adults all become the elephant in the room. It takes courage to change the course at any age to grow and become who you really are. At Broo Counseling we explore our surroundings, learn to break the chains that hold us back and challenge ourselves to take new risks. All good things in life can have an element of wild and free, but with a balance of copings mechanisms and support. I love working with children, teens, adults and families in a safe and non-judgemental space.

Welcome! I’m so glad you’re here. I know sometimes the journey to finding help may be bumpy. So give yourself some props for making it here. At times we all face struggles internal, external, and often a combination of both. I have observed that often we can feel stuck from these experiences, even if we’ve tried to move on from them. That is because we need a little guidance to process and repair the internal sense of disconnection that remains imprinted in our system. It is my hope to help facilitate a path towards increased sense of connection, finding more ease, feeling better, and move towards the life you want.

It is my personal and professional goal to assist you in attaining your full potential and goals in the therapeutic process. I am a firm believer in the therapeutic relationship as one of the most important tools in overcoming difficulties. I understand it is difficult to ask for help and I view this as a courageous act. We will work together to help you in working through your difficulties at your own pace and in your time. My typical client would be an adult seeking help with substance/alcohol use, co-occurring diagnosis, depression, anxiety, relationship problems, trauma/abuse, PTSD.

Everyone deserves to be seen and heard for who they truly are. Sometimes, due to life experiences and events, we lose track of who we are. We are left feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, sad, lost, angry, and not ourselves. Let's work together and explore all the possibilities your life has to offer you.

Ideally, we use an eclectic approach with therapy. Encompassing one particular approach is not beneficial - a "one size fits all" is counter therapeutic and does not allow the client to find refreshing avenues to discover abstinence/sobriety. Coupling our therapeutic approaches with Self-Help immersion, or non-traditional means, is well received. Additionally, we focus on developing a relapse prevention plan from the very first session. We call these "living, breathing documents which change throughout treatment". Please feel free to call with any questions you may have for yourself or loved one.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
