People are generally healthy as they move naturally through time, changing to accommodate new roles and challenges. Individuals, couples, and families seek therapy when their ways of being and relating are no longer working or aren't adequately meeting their needs. My role, as therapist, is to help create a context in which clients can explore different perceptions and ways of relating that are more satisfying.

As a Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapist and Certified Adoption Counselor, I can come along side to help you in a number of areas: formal and informal (kinship) adoption, parent stress management, transracial and bicultural adoptions, romantic relationship conflicts, parent-child attachment, and complex trauma.
Families, and the relationships that hold them together, are a part of all of us. Regardless of their beginning or circumstance, they shape us in a multitude of ways. Oftentimes, they can be the source of the happiest and most painful moments in our lives. And, learning how to navigate your way through those relationships, as they change and grow throughout your life, can be hard at times and can make you feel "stuck". That's where I come in.

I have extensive experience in the field of adoption and fertility, foster-care, sexual abuse and trauma, self-mutilation, addictions, depression and anxiety.
Currently I am accepting new therapy clients and I provide a safe haven where one can open-up and explore their thoughts and feelings. Sometimes situations or emotions have caused stumbling blocks in one's life. Together we can understand the core of the problem and progress to optimum mental health. Through building a relationship between therapist and client, we can work through even the most difficult of mental health concerns. I have been in private licensed psychotherapy practice since 1991. My current specializations and certification, transgender, non binary, LBGTQ. and EMDR I offer in person and virtual sessions.

My focus is on adolescents and young adults, with expertise in adoption and developmental trauma, but I also enjoy working with young-at-heart adults.
Does this sound like you or your child? Bright but not reaching your potential. Grades and evaluations that do not reflect their abilities. Constant battles over homework and following directions at home, unexpected outbursts, and a general sense of exhaustion (for everyone involved). Managing medication has also become challenging, and its effectiveness is uncertain. All you want is for others to see the wonderful person beneath these struggles. To address these challenges underlying these issues, I utilize a unique approach that integrates neurofeedback with counseling.

I am a clinical psychologist providing psychotherapy to children, adolescents, and adults. I aim to provide a therapeutic environment that is welcoming, non-judgmental, and respectful, while helping my patients to find healthful ways forward. With my younger patients, I work closely with parents, guardians, and educators alike.

Children between the ages of 5-19 who are questioning their gender identity, those who struggle with ADHD and executive dysfunction, Autism Spectrum disorder and of course the anxiety and depression that often accompany these diagnosis. The goals for many of the youth I work with include removing obstacles that impede school performance and self regulation skills. I frequently consult with child study teams, psychiatrists as well as a host of other medical professionals including pediatric endocrinologists for families considering puberty blockers and HRT for their child.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
