I see therapy as a way to develop a deeper understanding of the patterns that hold you back, get in the way of your goals, and keep you feeling depressed, anxious, and overwhelmed.
When you think about a better future for yourself, what do you envision? Are you feeling less stressed? Are you more confident? Is your relationship thriving? Are you getting more time to do the things you love? Therapy is a journey to find a path towards those goals. Therapy is an individualized process. Sometimes, we aren’t always aware of the thoughts, beliefs, and situations that prevent us from feeling better or getting our needs met. Other times, we are aware of these things but unsure on how to limit how much they impact us and how we can manage them.

Anxiety, depression, and worry are making you miserable and keeping you up at night. Nothing you have tried is helping, and you've tried everything. There's never enough time to get it all done, and the pressure never ends. You’re at your wits ends. When you play it forward you only see things getting worse. The unavoidable consequences to your relationships and family, your work, and your health are constant lurking threats. You keep your stress buried inside because you don’t know what else to do. Everyone thinks you have it all figured out. But the truth is you feel lost. You've worked too hard to feel so unhappy.

When people come to therapy they sometimes have a list of concerns and are not sure how to address them. I am an LCSW & LCADC who has been practicing for 25 years. I received my MSW from NYU and I have an interactive style. Some of the conditions I treat include bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, postpartum, & ADHD. I use CBT and was certified in DBT. I treat teenagers, adults, & families. I will diagnose conditions, provide therapeutic interventions appropriate for that diagnosis, and will provide education regarding additional referrals to additional supports if needed. I can also provide clinical supervision for LCSWs.

The price of therapy should not be anxiety provoking. Are you wrestling with feelings of depression or anxiety? Is your consumption of alcohol becoming a problem? As we work together in therapy, we can uncover the reasons for these emotions and behaviors. Sometimes these maladaptive coping mechanisms can stem from past trauma or deeper wounds. I am committed to working with you on your journey to become the best version of yourself.

Usually this manifests in anxiety, panic, depression, relationship issues, and trauma symptoms.
Congratulations on taking steps toward support! Finding a clinician is not always easy, it takes time, and starting is hard! But feeling connected with your provider is one of the most important aspects to create support and change. I hope you find that connection on your journey whether with me or somebody else. Most people start counseling from a place of feeling overwhelmed, stuck, and uncertain how to change it. Some people know what is creating these challenging emotions in their life and other's don't. We will work together to explore your personal factors, determine your ideal goals, and strategize steps to fulfill them!

Emotional difficulties block the path to a satisfying life that may manifest as depression, anxiety, bi-polar, anger/rage, psychosis and even suicidal thoughts. People find themselves trapped in conflict at work, relationships and with oneself. People may turn to destructive behaviors - substance/alcohol abuse, promiscuity, eating disorders or self-injury to find relief. Psychotherapy breaks these cycles by developing deeper insight of self and others while learning skills to help manage emotions and cope more effectively. I encourage a safe therapeutic relationship respecting the person's experience and confidentiality.

Whether you or your child or adolescent is struggling with anxiety, depression, abuse/trauma, academic pressures, ADHD, social challenges, self-esteem or behavior issues; I can help develop strategies and skills to feel better.
Are you worried about your child and struggling to find ways to help him/her? Does your son or daughter seem unusually sad, angry, have trouble making and keeping friends, or following rules? Sometimes after a change or trauma children express their difficulties through negative behaviors. As parents, we all want our kids to feel good about themselves and be successful. Sometimes its easy to lose sight of a child's strengths and positive attributes. I'm passionate about helping struggling kids and families get back on a positive track in a fun and engaging way.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
