In addition to my work as a general practitioner, I specialize in the treatment of substance use issues utilizing harm reduction psychotherapy.
I understand the decision to seek help can be a daunting one as there are many kinds of treatments for different kinds of issues. Successful treatment depends upon the relationship between you and your therapist. The quality of the alliance will contribute to improvement in your emotional well-being, relationships, career, and decrease in problematic behaviors. We will work towards developing coping skills that offer relief from anxiety, depression and other difficult emotions. I will also assist you to understand and work through patterns that contribute to difficulties.

I am a psychoanalyst by training, interested in resolving the causes of symptoms. Psychoanlysis is unique among therapies in that it not only seeks to alleviate psychic and emotional pain, but opens us to our own unique interiority so that we are able to live more meaningful and fulfilling lives. I have been a practicing therapist for thirty years, working psychodynamically and utilizing advanced training in psychoanalysis. My specialty is working with individuals suffering from Trauma, Depression and Anxiety. I am licensed in New York and New Jersey. I have offices in Fort Lee, Teaneck, and Lincoln Park.

In my opinion, there is no such thing as an ideal client. The human experience is far too vast and varying for one to be considered an ideal therapeutic client. It is my pleasure to engage with any individual who has the strength and awareness to seek mental health treatment and it is my privilege to be allowed into their lives. In my work as a therapist, it is my hope to work with my clients in such a way that encourages and inspires them to pursue their authentic-selves while building healthy, sustainable skills to cope with the myriad of struggles, obstacles, and experiences that life can entail.

When life seems overwhelming, you dont have to bear your pain alone. And when life seems the bleakest, having someone to share your innermost thoughts and feelings can bring relief. For 18 years, I have been helping people deal with their internal struggles. People frequently come to me because they find themselves with an unsuitable partner or continually dating unavailable people. My goal will be to help you have better, more fulfilling, love relationships and friendships. Together, in a warm, supportive setting we can explore what it is that interferes with your having a fulfilling relationship.

Debbie is proudly part of Tri America Health & Wellness and is offering telemedicine visits in NJ, NY, and FL. Grief is an part of life when we love others. But while most of us experience grief at some point, the pain can feel uniquely ours to handle. And that pain can be the result of so many different things… Like struggling with trauma or addiction in your life or the life of a loved one. Maybe you’ve experienced the loss of a child, parent, friend, or partner. Or maybe you’ve received a difficult diagnosis. No matter what it is, finding ourselves again amidst grief can be difficult—and we often need extra support in doing so.

I have spent my career helping individuals cope with issues that include, anxiety, depression, addiction and co-dependency. A good therapist helps you cope with your life by helping you recognize other options, along with offering support and reinforcing your strengths. Insight only represents a part of treatment. Convincing someone to try something new is the real challenge and that will only be accomplished in a safe, caring relationship. So, if you find yourself scared, frustrated, defeated or overwhelmed, allow me to accompany you on this journey. Together, we can figure out how to deal with all that troubles you-successfully.

If you are struggling with anxiety, depression, burnout, and increased reliance on substances to cope with uncertainty and confusion, you aren't alone. The Covid pandemic took the world by surprise and left us feeling unsafe and uncertain. Ever since, it's been crisis after crisis from climate change, deep-seated political divisions, and the threat of violence in our city and on a global scale. Talking about what's difficult to articulate is therapeutic. If you find yourself without the anchor of personal values and purpose, life can feel adrift and unmoored. I am here to help you make sense of it.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
