Timothy J. O’Connell, Ph.D. is clinical psychologist and couple and family therapist. He has been a trainer in family and couple therapy at several institutions. He trained with Dr. Salvador Minuchin, M.D. and Dr. Carl Whitaker, M.D. He is also a certified Holotropic Breathworker. As such he offers bimonthly Holotropic Breathwork session. Holotropic Breathwork is an experiential form of Transpersonal Psychology. He was certified in Holotropic Breathwork by Stanislav Grof, M.D. and Christina Grof. Dr. O’Connell has been in private practice for 30 years. Dr. O’Connell has special interests in couple and interpersonal relationships , experiential psychotherapy, meditation, Transpersonal Psychology and spirituality. He works with couples, individuals and families.

Thirty plus years of experience utilizing psychodynamic psychotherapy in adult, marital (couples), child, and family therapy. Further training and supervision was gleaned at the Institute for Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis of N.J. Although my orientation is eclectic, I lean towards an interpersonal interactive approach with my clients, unless contraindicated. As a Licenced Professional Counsleor I provided EAP assesssments,individual pychotherapy, family therapy, couple's therapy, and play therapy on an ongoing basis for diverse populations. I work with individuals beginning at age 5 up through middle and later adulthood. I have experience working with a variety of issues including anxiety, dpression, panic attacks, anger management, berevement and relationship issues.

I do no-baloney psychotherapy; that is to say, if you want to study yourself and grow, we will get along. If you need to blame others, you will be happier elsewhere. I also enjoy working with couples and frequently work with both parties separately and the couple together.

I also recognize that sometimes there's just a need to problem-solve and tackle challenging circumstances from a practical perspective. Difficult feelings such as sadness and worry, as well as problematic behavior patterns, usually arise from a combination of the typical pressures of life and our own personal histories.

I'm a former field instructor for the graduate schools of Columbia and Rutgers universities. I provide clear and direct feedback with compassion. My therapy sessions are short or long term, and goal-oriented in the CBT and DBT treatment framework. I'm knowledgeable about psychotropic medications and will work with prescribing physician as needed. Phone or e-mail inquiries are welcome. Reduced fee considered in special circumstances. I am a Medicare provider, but I am not in any other insurance networks, but out- of- network insurance plans will pay for part of your treatment. Group therapy offered periodically.
