Listening to the narrative of every person's life is fascinating to me. I am empathic, interactive and am a firm believer that good therapy brings results that make people feel more comfortable, empowered, and gives you the strength that is needed to grow. Therapy begins with identifying destructive themes that repeatedly arise, and interfere with one's life. I believe that therapy should be transformative, and provide a healing experience. I am particularly skilled in working with panic disorder/, depression, divorce conflict, and trauma, including sexual abuse.

My work is dedicated to helping you embrace who you are in order to live a fulfilling and balanced life. I focus on developing your ability to understand the powerful connection between your mind and body. This insight facilitates a path toward healing from current and past challenges. During the course of our work, I will help you develop your "Emotional Intelligence" (understanding of what motivates feelings and actions) and acquire the tools needed to overcome barriers blocking growth and change. Once you gain these coping skills, you will find yourself open to loving relationships, living in the present and creating a more fulfilling life.

Every day we make choices, big and small. In doing so, we create our ever-unfolding life story. I work with my clients to better understand what their unique "storyline" has been about; how their "script" originally got written; and how their present life challenges can be opportunities for discovering hidden strengths. These strengths are very important, as they will serve my clients in their next life chapter.

Recovery is not a solitary journey; it is about connection with self and others. As we enter into the process of therapy you will have the opportunity to experience inner connection and awareness leading to Self expansion and outer growth. I believe strongly that our primary task is to continue your journey of self exploration; to seek the wealth of potential, strength, compassion, understanding, and openness that lies within. It is your ability to connect with these that will serve as your greatest asset in obtaining whatever goals you have coming into therapy.

We are all filled with expectations and hopes, but sometimes things happen that keep us from our plans, from being happy, or just... from being. Perhaps fear, sadness, or grief have kept you stuck for a while, which has left you feeling depressed, anxious, or hopeless. This is completely understandable; our experiences can certainly shape us, but they do not have to define us. With compassion and warmth, I will help you explore your upbringing, problems of self-esteem, and communication style. In doing so, I am committed to helping you get the relief you have long needed, and deserve.

I work with anyone 18+ who has unprocessed trauma and it is impacting their present situations I work with survivors of gender-based violence whose experiences of abuse impacted their self-esteem and the ways they connect with themselves + others. I also work with their significant others/family members who have also been impacted by their loved ones’ experiences of trauma. I work with BIPOC millennials and adult children of immigrants who don’t feel enough, who are masking their struggles and engaging in avoidant behaviors, and who want to heal from their generational/cultural trauma.

Then I spent 4 years working in co-occurring substance abuse and mental health treatment at various levels of care (though the bulk of my time was spent in residential treatment) and 2 years in the telehealth outpatient world providing counseling to individuals, youth, families, and couples in a small Medicaid-based agency before branching out on my own.
My name is Kristin Charalambidis. I’m a licensed professional counselor based in NJ and host of the mental health podcast Out is Through: Personal Experiences and Therapy Soundbites. I began my work in the field interning with non-residential domestic violence counseling clients at various stages of leaving their abusive relationships…which was exactly the baptism by fire it sounds like and remains one of my most rewarding, life-changing experiences to date as I remain passionate about helping people heal from trauma.

My previous clinical experiences include community mental health, sexual violence support, individual/group counseling in medication assisted opioid treatment and as a Program Director providing services and resources to the 9/11 and responder community.
People seek therapy for many reasons. Perhaps you are in a crisis, confronting a life transition (divorce, retirement, death, illness, empty nest, new relationship), having difficulty coping with work stress, using/abusing substances, or "feeling stuck" and unable to make positive life changes. I believe that most of us have blind spots - emotional patterns or behaviors that can get in the way of our healing or fully exploring life’s challenges and opportunities. My role is to provide clinical insight and guidance that is collaborative and respectful, supporting your unique journey toward recovery and growth.

My specialties include: psychotherapy for adoption issues, trauma, PTSD, adult survivors of childhood abuse, depression and anxiety.
I strongly feel that healing can take place only in the context of a relationship in which someone experiences safety, compassion and understanding. It is through this process that people can awaken in themselves the possibilities for growth and transformation, often hidden by the negative effects of trauma, depression, anxiety, anger and loss. In my treatment approach, I communicate to my patients that they are not alone in their suffering, that they have the strength to tolerate the uncertainties of life, and they do have choices even if they feel stuck and alone.

My previous work with the Essex County Sexual Assault and Violence Education Center has helped me gain experience in the treatment of trauma.
Are you looking to make a shift? I am licensed Marriage and Family Therapist working with individuals, couples, families, and groups. I believe therapy can be seen as a process of unpacking. Things often go unsaid, which can manifest into various effects on the body, such as anxiety. Although staying with your emotions can be difficult, it can often be the pathway to healing. My clinical experience has allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of our environment and relationships, as well as the positive shifts that can take place when offered supportive and validating resources.

Domestic Abuse Therapists

What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?

Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognize that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?

Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?

Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?

It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
