Sometimes you just need a neutral person to talk to that has expertise in emotional and mental health well being. We all have to deal with life's adversities, but we all don't choose to take care of ourselves through those difficult times. The most important first step is to choose a therapist that can listen and support you through life on life's terms. Change, loss, anxiety, depression, relationship conflicts are all a part of living, but that doesn't mean it's easy. Life can be hard, but we can do hard things, especially with the support of your therapist.

Stress, anxiety, and depression, and other mental illnesses impact physical health, relationships with our loved ones, and affect work performance. Each of individual experiences and copes with challenges differently. We perceive, process and react though the unique lens of personal history, present day experience and unique physiology. Therapy helps to clarify the "building blocks" of the unique lens through which we perceive our world. Therapy then helps us make conscious and change aspects of the lens that contribute to our difficulties and distress, so that we can create health and wholeness in ourselves and our relationships.

My ideal client is someone who is willing to put in the work in the therapeutic process. The client should be able to recognize that there are changes that need to happen and are willing to do what it takes to make therapy work for them. The main issues that I work with are anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder. The goals of therapy would be to find a balance between where emotions no longer inhibit a person's ability to function on a daily basis.

My expertise is informed by more than 10 years in clinical practice as well as over 25 years in Human Service Practice skills. I am very compassionate and value the capacity for individuals to reach their highest desires. When conflicts are experienced in life, they can certainly be immobilizing. It is at this turning point when having a professional "outside voice" that can listen, provide guidance in a non-judgmental setting, and assist with making healthy choices will become an asset to you.

“I feel stuck.... Nothing is going to get better... I don’t know why I feel this way... Nobody understands what I'm going through.” How many of these thoughts sound familiar? Sometimes, one of the most difficult things to navigate is how we feel. Life is hard. It’s filled with things that are stressful, overwhelming, painful, and heartbreaking. It can be challenging just to get through the day without crying, losing motivation, isolating, or feeling hopeless. It can be a lot to handle. Figuring out how to change that doesn’t have to be.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
