We all face struggles in life. Maybe relationships or sexual behavior seem "crazy” or consuming. Or, maybe you struggle with extreme eating habits, spending or another kind of compulsive behavior. Maybe your job exposes you to daily risk and tragedy and you're feeling the weight of it. You may struggle to manage emotions, anxiety, loneliness, grief. All my clients deal with these kinds of things. It’s no coincidence they've also usually dealt with abuse, family dysfunction or trauma. Many have PTSD, CPTSD or dissociative disorder.

Healing doesn't mean the loss didn't happen. It means that it no longer controls us. - David Kessler. Loss is an inevitable part of life. Whether the loss is due to cancer, death of a loved one, divorce, trauma or another significant life event, our lives can get totally thrown off course. While I believe in our innate capacity to heal, when anxiety, depression or PTSD develops, recovery can stall. When this happens, the right therapist can help you to access your inner strengths and learn new coping strategies to regain control of your life and move forward in ways that have meaning and purpose.

We all need support at different stages in our lives. Therapy is a healthy option to consider when we are going through a difficult time, need someone to listen to us and to receive support where we may not be receiving it elsewhere. Unloading and opening up without any judgment can be such a relief.

We all struggle from time to time, but recently you’ve been feeling more burnt out than usual. Perhaps you’ve been dealing with constant worry, feelings of overwhelm, sleepless nights or just a general dissatisfaction with life. Sometimes the thought runs through your head of “is it supposed to feel like this?” or maybe you’re hounded by the feeling of “this is not where I should be in life.” Sometimes you may even wonder if you’re a good friend, spouse, parent, or child. On the outside, you probably appear to be functioning and successful. On the inside, you feel prisoner to your negative thoughts and perfectionism.

You can't stop worrying, even when it seems like there's nothing to worry about. You feel tired, irritated, or constantly on autopilot. Socializing is overwhelming and exhausting. This is not the life you pictured for yourself.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
