Being human can feel messy and complicated at times. Being in a space of transition can feel challenging. We may experience these struggles as sadness, confusion, feeling lost, or alone. Determining the path forward can feel overwhelming, yet by taking the first step, hope can be found. I believe it is essential to be able to identify where we feel stuck in order to be able to take meaningful action. By determining the different areas in your life where you would like to create change, you will be able to discover your empowerment.

Life can get complicated. That’s its nature, after all. Survive, thrive; rinse, recycle, repeat. The hope is there is much more thriving than surviving. It doesn’t always happen that way, though. I’m here to help walk with you through those moments of uncertainty, dissatisfaction, fear, cautious optimism, and everything in between. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC), and Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS). I work with adults through a trauma-attuned lens. I’ve been in the field of human services since 2006 working in various levels of care.

Like many of you, I find the roles I fill within my own family (wife, mother, daughter, in-law, and sister) to be challenging. The family I grew up in didn’t solve problems. We shouted about them, ignored them, ignored each other, and then repeated these patterns over and over again under different circumstances. I was actually relieved when my parents eventually divorced, because I was hopeful that our home life would be happier. Changing the living situations didn’t change our interaction patterns. Seemingly simple disagreements escalated quickly, we ended up saying hurtful things which we later regretted.

Finding help in the face of emotional pain is an act of courage. A chronic storm of emotions may leave you bouncing between panic, fear, shame, and self-doubt. It is exhausting and can leave you feeling hopeless and afraid. Trying everything you can think of but still not feeling the happiness, confidence and life satisfaction that you long for. Still, somehow a felt sense inside reveals glimmers of the more healed, happier person you know you can be. Like something that you cannot quite grasp, but sense its authentic presence. A call inward. A call to heal.

Attachment-based Therapists
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.
What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.
How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.
Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
