Over the course of my career I have had the advantage of working with very diverse populations; high school students , the military , and compulsive gamblers . I have used many techniques to help my clients but the most important "tools" are the ones that empower individuals and that they will use regularly . My approach is eclectic based on my experience and what is practical. All clients have a resilency that is often lost in the course of everyday life and especially in situations that erode their strengths . Understanding how to uncover and recover their strengths in a valuable tool.

I am a strong believer in the quote, "Be yourself; everyone else is taken." In a world marked by constant change and societal pressures, the quote serves as a reassuring reminder that our most authentic self is our greatest gift. I aim to create a safe space to explore your thoughts and emotions, all while helping you to navigate along your personal journey. In our shared commitment, we will center around identifying areas where change is desired, setting attainable goals, and implementing strategies that propel you towards the positive outcomes you seek.

Often times, the hardest part of therapy can be making that first appointment and showing up. I commend you for taking the first step and seeking a therapist that feels like a good fit for you. Life can bring so many unexpected and painful challenges that can cause us to feel anxious, stressed, overwhelmed and sometimes even numb. When it feels like it is all too much, therapy can help. Whether it be social stressors, grief and loss, major life transitions, work-life balance, anxiety, relationship issues, or something else, my goal is to provide you with a safe and comfortable space to share and work it through.

I see my clients as unique individuals, as I am a firm believer of meeting a client where they currently are and working together on exploring their needs and goals. Life is always changing, these changes, whether anticipated or not, can often create uncomfortable and confusing thoughts and emotions, leaving us feeling overwhelmed and emotionally vulnerable. Making the decision to start therapy is the first step in what can be a very difficult and scary decision to make. I provide a safe and comfortable environment to help each patient gain a better understanding of their needs and finding their full potential.

Overcoming the stigma associated with seeking counseling can be incredibly challenging for many. Recognizing when to seek help is a big accomplishment. It is important to be aware that we do not need to face life’s challenges alone. It is my duty to walk by your side while navigating whatever situation you may be struggling with. I have experience working with adults in an outpatient setting, assisting them in addressing a wide range of challenges with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, mood disorders, grief, and life transitions.

I have extensive experience helping people who suffer from depression, anxiety, trauma, grief/ loss, difficult life changes as well as many others.
With over 25 years working in the mental health field, I have found that a compassionate, empathetic approach is a necessity when providing therapy. Seeking therapy can be very challenging; one has usually endured a great amount of hardship or discomfort before even making the decision to seek help. A significant aspect to therapy is that to be truly effective, a person must feel comfortable with their therapist and build considerable trust to help facilitate their healing. My goal is to find the best approach that will work for you, maximizing the benefit you will receive in therapy.

Healing from abusive, narcissistic relationships, divorce, the loss of a loved one, or navigating through life’s changes takes time, patience, and the right for you therapist.
Life is full of transitions: Marriages, divorces, change of career, retirement, mid life crisis, illness. At times we feel overwhelmed. But no matter how hopeless things may appear at a time, I believe that there is a wholeness and healthiness within. I help men and women to get in touch with the part of them that is well, to heal the part that is hurting.Happiness in life comes through knowing what to hold onto, what to let go of and what to change and how. Things we perceive as negative gain a new meaning when viewed from a place of power, when new skills are learned. See what my patients say about me in Yelp, under Mena Urban

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
