Thank you for reviewing my listing and considering use of my services. I have been a licensed clinical psychologist for over 15 years. I have extensive experience with patients from all walks of life. My approach is typically cognitive-behavioral in the context of a supportive/empathic relationship. Due to my varied background as a psychology instructor and supervisor of interns and postdoctoral fellows, I also bring a distinctly psycho-educational approach to my clinical practice; I enjoy teaching about psychology and behavior in the service of helping people to gain insight and make positive change in their lives.

My ideal client is someone who recognizes the need for change in their relationships and is ready to take the courageous step toward personal growth. They may be experiencing issues related to codependency, such as difficulty setting boundaries, low self-esteem, or feeling overly responsible for others. Often, these clients find themselves in patterns of caretaking, neglecting their own needs, and struggling with feelings of guilt or resentment. These clients typically seek to break free from these cycles and desire healthier, more balanced relationships.

Hey there, I'm Ryan! Life is full of ups and downs, situations that can really tug at our emotions and shape the way we think and act. Sometimes, these situations throw us off balance and lead to symptoms that disrupt our daily routines. But here's the good news: through a blend of supportive counseling and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), we can work together to steer these changes in a positive direction. CBT is a powerful tool that helps us reframe our thoughts and behaviors for a healthier mindset and lifestyle.

For many, reaching out for help feels extremely difficult.
Some of my clients have faced a stumbling block in their life recently and wish to figure out how to move forward. Some more of my clients have struggled for a great deal of time with their mental health, trauma, behaviors, and/or addictions. Some just summoned the courage to seek help for the first time, and some have come seeking a new therapist with a different approach after a previous one didn't work out. Regardless of the journey that brought you here, I am passionate about collaborating with you to help you turn things around.

I see adolescents and adults who suffer with various issues including depression, anxiety, trauma, ADHD, OCD, mood disorders, relationship problems, as well as substance abuse and addiction. I believe in the good nature of most people and the need to grow and learn from our life experiences. At times in our life, it becomes important to stop and recognize our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that can interfere with who we want to be and hope to become. In my practice, I utilize an array of treatment modalities that will help you to make better decisions for yourself, your partner and/or your family.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
