Therapy for couples and individuals with anxiety in MA and NH. Your relationship is on the rocks. One of you feels alone and misunderstood, the other just wants the fighting to stop. You’ve tried so much to change this relationship and nothing is working. You try to bring up things to your partner in a neutral way but it inevitably spirals into a conflict and before you know it you’re back in that same awful place of disconnection that seems to happen over and over again without resolution. You’re told you’re being too critical, too defensive, not listening enough. You feel like you are constantly walking on eggshells.

Pete works with his clients on coping skills to reduce negative thinking and behavior, exploring communication patterns within family systems, and helping people break down the challenges presented by problems like depression and anxiety into smaller, more manageable pieces.
Pete has more than 15 years of experience as a teacher and counselor. Pete approaches his work from a systems perspective and his areas of interest include working with adolescents, individuals and families struggling with addiction, and couples. He also works with individuals of all ages to help them explore their beliefs and how those beliefs affect their present selves. Regardless of the root of symptoms, exploring how we think about ourselves and the world around us and working to replace the behaviors and beliefs that no longer serve us often help us get unstuck and move forward to achieving our goals.

Seeking out help for a problem that you can’t solve on your own is one of life’s more difficult – and brave – first steps. In my capacity as a clinical psychologist, I have witnessed so many people make transformational changes in overcoming depression, trauma, anxiety, and the problems that arise from both personal history and current difficulties. By tailoring the way I work to meet your specific and unique needs, we can, together, work toward both healing and expanding emergent capacities for positive change.

I work with adults & seniors 65+ who struggle with depression & anxiety, relationships, aging; trauma, past sexual abuse, and challenges of day/day living.
People have taught me they naturally want to move away from emotional pain. I was an EMT for 10 yrs. before transitioning into the field of mental health in 1988. As an EMT I learned how incredibly varied people are when injured physically & emotionally. The skills learned in therapy encourage a healthier manner to deal with challenges as they progress through life.

Working with adolescents is rewarding as well as challenging. Kids today are having to juggle more than ever before with being in the social media and immediate gratification era . Not having all the tools available to them at times makes it even more difficult for them. I am able to share with kids that they are not alone and that there are other kids out there who struggle with similar difficulties.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
