What is Pastoral Psychotherapy? Pastoral Psychotherapy draws upon psychology and spirituality to assist persons in resolving problems and facilitating the growth process. There are periods in life when stresses require that one enter into a close relationship with a person to find clarity and direction. I help persons evaluate and enrich their lives through this kind of relationship. My training allows me to provide both traditional psychotherapy and a more holistic approach to healing, so persons entering psychotherapy with me have a choice of which model that one prefers.

Our thoughts, feelings and behaviors create our experiences. As a psychotherapist with over 25 years of experience, I feel that therapy is a process of creating change in those repetitive and maladaptive patterns leading to a better, more satisfying life. Therapy allows a person to explore and develop skills to effectively cope with personal and growth's transitions and challenges. I work with each individual on finding the right balance of mind, body, spirit connection that gives a person the ability to better assess for personal goals and plan for a more satisfying future.

It is my belief that we are all seeking answers as to why we are here and what our purpose is. The only way to find these answers is to identify our values, strengths, weaknesses and barriers and also address what makes us suffer. I believe in healing and nurturing the very aspects of ourselves that make us unique and believe that through changes and transitions we learn how resilient and powerful we really are . With consistent therapy, we are able to step back, reflect and plan for how to respond and endure challenges that arise in our lives while learning appropriate coping techniques and routines.

I have been a practicing psychotherapist in Portsmouth for 25 years, specializing in depression, anxiety, and relationship issues. I have also successfully helped clients struggling with trauma, OCD, anger management, prolonged grief, parenting issues, and Bi-polar Disorder. I emphasize a collaborative effort with clients and believe therapy is only successful when there is a positive relationship between the client and the clinician. I have worked with numerous clients who have needed medication at some point in their treatment. I do not rush to recommend medication, but I do work closely PCP's or psychiatrists if medication is necessary.

Feeling overwhelmed? Maybe you’re sad all the time or your thoughts won’t stop racing. Maybe you’re angry and frustrated by a relationship. Maybe you’ve suffered a loss and don’t feel like your “normal” self.

Having started working as a therapist 15 years ago, I continue to feel grateful to join clients on their pathway to healing. I believe that a relaxed, interactive, nonjudgmental, and empathic style leads to the most successful therapeutic outcomes. I often use a mix of cognitive behavioral therapy, EMDR, insight oriented therapy, and psychodynamic concepts. I find that a collaborative, team approach focused on solutions to the pain or discomfort in the "here and now" encourages emotional growth. I work with individuals 21 and older.

I integrate psychodynamic, somatic, mindfulness, and IFS modalities.
Psychological suffering exists on different levels and manifests in different ways, in psyche, body, interpersonally, socially, both consciously and unconsciously. Thankfully, there are many ways to address psychological struggle, ranging from the exploration of non-conscious intra-psychic and interpersonal dynamics underlying "symptoms" to the exploration of ways that we are alienated from community. This work is especially helpful when the source of our suffering is unclear. My work is social justice-informed and incorporates an understanding of how larger systems impact our lives. Facilitating empowerment is key in my work.

I draw from motivational interviewing, psychodynamic, narrative, and cognitive behavioral practices.
I'm passionate about working with individuals navigating depression, anxiety, mania, and perinatal mental health concerns. Engaging in therapy can be particularly meaningful when experiencing interpersonal conflicts and going through major life events: such as the onset of a mood disorder, preparing for life after high school and college, moving to a new community, adjusting to early parenthood, or coping with pregnancy loss.

I believe that changes result from my long experience in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic non-judgmental listening and a collaborative approach.
I work with people who are experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship problems, and life transitions, drawing on 3 decades of experience in supporting people to become the best possible version of themselves. I'm mindful of your formative history but stay in the present, using our different kind of conversation to explore feelings and behavior patterns that have impacted your current experience.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
