To ask questions, make observations, to receive their stories, to create a room for laughing, crying, fear, anger and numbness, all to be allowed and welcomed here.
I have experience working with a wide range of clients with a diversity of needs and challenges, but all have had this in common: the human need to be understood, accepted, and known. Psychologist Carl Rogers said, “The curious paradox is that when I accept myself, just as I am, then I can change.” The people I work with are no more "broken" than others, though it may feel that way and that's a real experience. I work with people who are ready to embark on their own journey and come to know, understand, love and respect themselves and their experiences on the way, and discover the change that can grow out of that.

I have 16 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and families struggling with stress, anxiety, depression, peer relationship difficulties, anger management, and impulse control issues.
Email is the best way to connect with me at this time. At life can feel overwhelming and difficult to navigate. I believe that everyone has the potential to overcome adversity and create a fulfilling and meaningful life when we identify and harness our individual strengths and connections.

They Say "It takes a Village" Do you ever worry that you're just not getting through to your child? Does it seem like no matter what you try, nothing seems to work? Some families don't have a "village" to help them with all the different struggles kids face today. I have worked in many different settings; hospitals, group homes, schools, residential treatment centers, and clinical outpatient offices. I have helped lots of children of all age ranges and their families with similar situations that you're probably facing.

Behavior is more complex than simple choice. Behaviors develop over time and are impacted by various internal and external factors. Our approach to facilitating behavior change recognizes that each individual's unique situation and the factors that contribute to their choices and behaviors can be understood. Together, we can use this understanding to create a plan for change. Two underutilized interventions for behavior change are cue desensitization and environmental engineering. We will join you in your environment in order to most effectively foster these changes in your life.

It's ok to start therapy just because you think you need a little extra help, even if you are usure of "why". Seeking therapy is a routine and preventive form of healthcare, like going to the dentist. A therapist is like a personal trainer for your mind and your relationships. Perhaps begin by identifying broad motives, your hopes, and your dreams. Consider that your heartfelt thoughts and feelings may be "I just want to be happy." or "I feel stuck" or even "I'm tired of merely going through the motions".

You may be here because you want to be able to adapt to a new transition, acknowledge and process difficult emotions, and engage in growth. Wherever you are in the process, I will meet you where you're at to help you get to where you want to be. Therapy asks that you be vulnerable, trusting, ready for change, and willing to do the work and I am honored to be considered as your therapist.

I have been a practicing psychotherapist in Portsmouth for 25 years, specializing in depression, anxiety, and relationship issues. I have also successfully helped clients struggling with trauma, OCD, anger management, prolonged grief, parenting issues, and Bi-polar Disorder. I emphasize a collaborative effort with clients and believe therapy is only successful when there is a positive relationship between the client and the clinician. I have worked with numerous clients who have needed medication at some point in their treatment. I do not rush to recommend medication, but I do work closely PCP's or psychiatrists if medication is necessary.

Anger Management Therapists

How long does therapy take for anger management?

Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?

Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?

Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
