Let's talk! I believe that it's essential for clients to feel comfortable/safe enough to share the deeply personal aspects of one's life with another. Particularly, when discussing concerns/ issues with someone new to them. You have already made that first step. By working together in a trusting therapeutic relationship, you can attain the personal growth you're seeking. Therapy is a process. Personal evolution takes time and is dependent on the individual and the treatment methodology (e.g. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Motivational Interviewing, Assessing Readiness for Substance Use Disorder Treatment).

I have over 40 years experience treating individuals, couples and groups. My techniques vary according to the needs of my clients. I offer brief treatment with focus on a specific issue; long term psychodynamic psychotherapy for greater self understanding;and EMDR for traumas. I’ve worked supportively with hundreds of clients in troubled relationships whether they decide to work through the issues with the partner or separate and begin a new phase of life. Teaching mindfulness techniques I help clients learn to pause, and change negative reacting. I created a Cd: Journey to Inner Peace: Meditation and relaxation exercises.

My style is relational and psychodynamic.
It is normal amidst abrupt change to feel contradictory feelings. You may feel stuck, confused, angry, ashamed, or even that you do not recognize yourself. I specialize in helping people find a sense of self and purpose as they navigate transitions such as illness and injury, grief, relationship ruptures, and career disruptions. Anxiety, depression, shame, and guilt often bubble to the surface during intense transitions and you are not alone. My work involves providing compassionate, yet direct guidance and reflection while helping you access inner strengths, resilience, and direction.

I combine a relational, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral approach in my practice.
I work with artists, couples, people with chronic illness, and young adults with separation and intimacy issues, seeking to find who they are. We consider how "old issues" sometimes interfere in our moving forward. I help individuals pick good partners and feel safe letting someone get close to them. I also help them to set appropriate boundaries with their parents and others. I reduce my fees to what is affordable for the client. I enjoy working with couples and understand cultural differences, having a Ph.D. In Russian, and lived in Russia and France, and worked with Asians, Latinos, Russians, Mormons, and Orthodox Jews.

My interventions are varied (psychodynamic, attachment theory, cognitive behavioral therapy, narrative therapy) and individually based.
I am a licensed clinical social worker with nearly twenty years of experience treating children, adolescents, young adults and adults. My clients often come to therapy looking for relief from anxiety, depression, trauma, as well as pervasive negative thinking patterns and behaviors. These issues adversely impact the quality of day to day functioning and interpersonal relationships. In therapy, we work together to understand the root cause of the identified issues. This greater understanding helps us identify which coping mechanisms may be used to improve daily functioning.

I believe that there is no such thing as "one size fits all", therefore, I incorporate a variety of techniques  to address each client's individual needs, including: psychodynamic, CBT, motivational interviewing, mindfulness and Dialectical-Behavioral skills.
"There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in" (Leonard Cohen). We all strive to be our “best" selves, but often we can get in our own way by constantly comparing and judging, or belittling our accomplishments while magnifying our mistakes. Together we can learn how to manage our own thoughts and behaviors in order to illicit positive change in ourselves and our relationships. I provide individual therapy for clients dealing with mood and anxiety issues, relationship difficulties, loss, self-esteem issues, work-related stressors, life transitions and more.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
