Therapy is a process. I believe the most important elements include forming a meaningful connection, recognizing strengths, and facilitating unique pathways to growth and change. Life can be challenging, it is full of both wonder and adversity, we are all on a journey and at times it can be helpful to talk about what is going on. The last several years have been different than anything we have experienced. As we enter the "new normal" there continues to be a lot to take in. It is important to practice self care and to reach out for support when needed.

Do you find yourself wanting to live life more authentically and be true to yourself, but sometimes feel the need to put on a mask for others and act like everything's okay? It can be so draining to manage our mental health when we're constantly stressed and burnt out. Sometimes, all we really need is a supportive space where we can be ourselves and maybe even receive some gentle guidance when we're not quite hitting the mark. It's important to recognize that you deserve so much more than what life has handed you. Ask yourself this: What would your life be like if you weren't so stressed, mad at yourself, upset, or anxious?

The rug has been pulled out beneath you; your relationship is over. The life you once had is now gone and the future so uncertain. How could this have happened? Your emotional wounds so raw and painful.. it's hard to even get out of bed. The crying spells just can’t seem to stop no matter how hard you try to get through the day. Focusing on your work or daily tasks seems impossible. Your partner who once declared their love has now caused so much pain.Your confusion and heartbreak are unbearable at times. You can't help but be stuck in thoughts of the past and fears of the future;unable to be in the present moment. Lost & alone.

If you often feel taken for granted, hurt, emotionally exhausted, under-appreciated, resentful or left feeling guilty when saying no to others it is likely that your boundaries are often crossed. Do you often find yourself over-explaining, feeling guilty if people are disappointed with you or not wanting to rock the boat? One of the most painful tasks in relationships is setting and maintaining healthy boundaries. We all have an internal gauge for how much to give or take. Nonetheless, when we were raised on not having emotional needs, setting boundaries becomes very taxing and confusing because we learned how to hide our feelings.

The purpose of counseling is to help people cope with problems in daily living and to deal with inner conflicts which hinder various aspects of their personal satisfaction and functioning. This purpose is usually accomplished by increasing the client's personal awareness, increasing the client's acceptance of self and others, and having the client make behavioral and cognitive changes to attain personal goals. To achieve this, I utilize a combination of research-based practices such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectic behavior therapy, solution focused therapy, reality therapy, motivational interviewing, and client-centered therapy.

My practice is based on the understanding that many clients have suffered overwhelming, traumatic, or adverse childhood experiences regardless of whether they are coming to therapy specifically due to these experiences. With compassion and care, I approach every session from a trauma informed lens. Instead of asking, "What is wrong with you?" I explore, "What have you experienced in your life and how might these symptoms be a response to it?" I am also particularly sensitive to the needs of often undiagnosed adults with ADHD and how trauma and the ADHD brain are interconnected.

North Star Family Autism Center was founded to provide support to individuals with autism spectrum disorder and their parents, siblings, or other caregivers as they navigate their experiences. Individuals with autism may need help managing challenges related to their diagnosis, as well as difficult feelings such as anxiety or sadness. Family members may have difficulty coping with the many emotions they experience while caring for an individual with autism. They may also struggle to understand autism and how best to help their child or sibling build communication skills or reduce challenging behavior.
