Hi, I'm Shonda R. Brooks, MA, LPC, NCC, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) in NJ, a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC), certified Prepare/Enrich Trainer and Facilitator, and am level 1 & 2 EMDR trained. I have experience in counseling individuals, groups, families, and couples. I also work specifically with high profile clients having experience with musicians, actors, politicians, professional sports players, and more. I pride myself on maintaining confidentiality; noting the increased need for privacy and awareness of the constraints various industries have on the high-profile client.

From there, we’ll integrate cognitive behavioral strategies & the power of EMDR to gain insights from the present to heal your old wounds once and for all.
Our weight-obsessed culture chastises and shames you, as though your body size is not only a personal moral failing, but a reliable indicator of poor health. Over time, you started internalizing this anti-fat bias, and often treat yourself with the same level of contempt. You either avoid seeking medical care altogether, or expose yourself to the risk of weight stigma (far more harmful than any presumed adverse effect of your weight itself). You forgot how to nourish yourself – sometimes forbidding yourself food, sometimes isolating in shame for a binge, sometimes "paying" via purge. But friend, you are meant to bloom - not shrink.

Using evidenced based approaches (psychodynamic, CBT, DBT and EMDR) has helped hundreds of women throughout the tri-state area - and those they love - transform their lives through self-empowerment and the acquisition of new skills and perspectives.
Reading through these profiles can feel daunting when you are unsure of who can best help you. You need an able, expert guide worthy of your own commitment to face unresolved challenges. Good therapy gives causative insight, but GREAT therapy supports YOUR vision of creating a "life worth living". My work covers; career and relationships, animal companion loss, trauma related to pregnancy, childbirth and infertility, chronic or terminal illness, disordered eating, grief and loss (including child and fetal loss). My latest book, Mourning Companion Animals, Guiding Clients from Loss to Legacy is available on Amazon and other vendors.

I have specialized training in treating PTSD, Complex PTSD and Dissociation using a relational approach along with EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).
My practice is based on the understanding that many clients have suffered overwhelming, traumatic, or adverse childhood experiences regardless of whether they are coming to therapy specifically due to these experiences. With compassion and care, I approach every session from a trauma informed lens. Instead of asking, "What is wrong with you?" I explore, "What have you experienced in your life and how might these symptoms be a response to it?" I am also particularly sensitive to the needs of often undiagnosed adults with ADHD and how trauma and the ADHD brain are interconnected.

I am also engaged in an extensive EMDR training through The Parnell Institute for the treatment of traumatic memories and attachment issues.
My practice name is Wintertree Psychotherapy taken from an inspiring book titled, The Tree That Survived The Winter by Mary Fahy. The book is an adult fable for all who have faced dark, cold and lonely times and come out on the other side. When in crisis we seek safe, mindful problem-solving, and often discover an opportunity for personal growth. I provide a calm and supportive setting to reduce anxiety and stress, increase a sense of confidence and competence, and promote the creation of more satisfying connections to self and others. I enjoy working with individuals, couples, and families.

Thus, I can help with a localized problem using EMDR or CBT methods or untangle a deeper issue using existentialist and insight-oriented approaches.
I believe that my work is in helping clients walk less blindly through life. I try to ask questions to clarify the principles underlying the ways they relate to the world and others. I help not only with common problems (anxiety, depression, PTSD, phobias, OCD, etc.) but also work with those whose issues are not easily captured by a diagnosis and are existential in nature. The so-called "worried well" come to uncover and work through the sources of internal struggles, in order to become their best selves and live a more fulfilling life.
I am fully bilingual and practice in both English and Russian.

So, I blend elements of traditional "talk therapy" with more trauma-focused techniques, including EMDR, Internal Family Systems ("parts work"), and somatic techniques.
You may find yourself feeling "stuck" in your current experience, repeating patterns that no longer serve you, and are unsure of how to get out of the cycle. You may be new to therapy, and unsure of what you would even talk about, but have a sense that you are impacted by past events in your life that you haven't fully addressed. Or, you may be arriving here after years of therapy, frustrated with a lack of progress with previous treatment that, while perhaps helpful, did not seem to address some of your core issues. Regardless of your history, or how long you've been struggling, meaningful change and growth is possible.

I use trauma-informed modalities such as EMDR, IFS, imagery, and mindfulness to help the client process their experience and learn new coping tools.
Every person has their unique journey to healing and self discovery. In experiencing my own life challenges, I found healing through immersing myself in mindfulness practices and looking deeper within myself. Since then, I knew my purpose was to help others heal in their life journey as well. I have since have been helping others achieve their personal goals of understanding themselves, their relationships with others, coping with their fears, and embracing new beginnings. Sessions are approached from a traditional and holistic perspective, giving consideration to the overall mind, body, spirit, and emotion of the person.

I have since have been helping others achieve their personal goals of understanding themselves, their relationships with others, coping with their fears, and embracing new beginnings. Sessions are approached from a traditional and holistic perspective, giving consideration to the overall mind, body, spirit, and emotion of the person.

I am a Certified Practitioner in Psychodrama and trained EMDR therapist.
You feel sad, confused, or overwhelmed. You're afraid you will fall apart if you open up. You're stuck and you don't know where to go from here. When you’re trying to hold it all together it's difficult to reach out for help. You deserve a safe place to go, where you can put down all the pain and fear you've been carrying, and begin to find yourself again. It's my personal hope that I can provide this space for you, so you can receive the compassion and support needed to move forward on your journey.
