What’s going on with my child or teen? Do they need therapy? And if so, what kind? As a psychoanalyst who treats children and adolescents, these are the questions I so often hear from parents and caregivers. A wide range of behaviors can trouble a parent – excessive or crippling anxiety; phobias and fears, sudden tantrums or rage, intense mood swings, even thoughts of wanting to harm oneself or others. Problems with school work, peers and even siblings can accompany these behaviors. If bizzare of autistic-like symptoms are also involved, numerous types of interventions may also have been tried in the past, but with little success.
As a clinician, my first goal is to carefully evaluate what has gone developmentally wrong and why; second is to create a treatment plan that includes interventions for both child and parent, especially during those tough transition times a child or teen most often face - from childhood to grade school, during the middle school years, or later adolescence.
