Life can be difficult to navigate. Working a demanding job, managing a household, engaging in a relationship, caring for children, maintaining a social life, addressing physical health concerns, and so many other daily pressures can overwhelm anyone, leaving you to question who you are and what your purpose is in this world. My goal is to help you, your relationships, and your family to grow and thrive. By building upon your individual strengths, we can work together to find solutions that work for you to overcome the challenges you are facing and rediscover who you are as an individual.

I have found, the current challenges of many of my clients often stem from some negative, past experience(s). Oftentimes, some childhood adversity or dysfunctional family dynamics have led to some developmental trauma; other times, some acute or complex trauma continues to affect individuals in very different and unseen ways. Over time, the burden of past wounds weighs down one’s spirit resulting in increased vulnerability and decreased resilience; this may be described as burnout, overwhelm, work stress, depression, anxiety, ADHD, relationship/trust issues, hypersensitivity, social avoidance, and a host of others.

Difficulties in life, environmental influences and other predisposing factors can contribute to unhealthy emotional states. They can leave us feeling depressed, overwhelmed, helpless and struggling to find positive solutions. If you are experiencing any of these feelings or are having problems in your relationships know that you are not alone and help is available.

As an EMDR trained therapist practicing for over 10 years (licensed both in Washington State and Nebraska), I guide you in confidently processing, accepting and gaining wisdom from your past experiences that then allows you to move forward with a newfound sense of clarity and confidence.
Why revisit the past? Processing past trauma may feel overwhelming, or you may even convince yourself that it’s irrelevant. Besides, the past is in the past, right? Actually, not so much. When left unprocessed, or buried away, the past tends to find a way of playing out again and again in familiar patterns and cycles that are very much present- and can create very real blocks or dis-ease within your life. The goal of revisiting your past is not to forever close that door once and for all, but to fully integrate past into present.

I have been trained in using EMDR, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to treat both mental health and substance use disorders.
Unfortunately, painful events in life are inevitable. The good thing is that suffering from these events can be optional. Helping people to build or rebuild a life with a new "normal" through these difficult times is something I have enjoyed doing for almost 25 years. I have had the privilege of working with people by addressing a variety of issues including substance abuse and other addictions, co-occurring disorders, trauma, depression, anxiety, relationships, divorce, unresolved grief, co-dependency, and anger management to name a few. Together, we can restore the peace, serenity and confidence back in your life.

I view all therapeutic work through a trauma-informed lens and use EMDR and Internal Family Systems (IFS) as my primary treatment modalities.
We collect experiences as we move through life. These experiences form the lens through which we view ourselves and the world around us. My goal is to support clients in processing their experiences, understanding how those experiences have shaped their world, and finding value in who they are as a result of their story so far.

Most often I draw from my trainings in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, and trauma skills training (including use of EMDR).
I believe that our mental health should be a priority. The journey of one's life can be thrown off course by unexpected changes, trauma, grief, and emotional struggles. The counseling process, along with a strong therapeutic relationship, can be a supportive way to find understanding, healing, wholeness and direction. I am committed to providing a welcoming environment where individuals and families can feel unconditional acceptance and a sense of hope. I will work with you to create therapeutic goals that are meaningful to you, in an effort to help you feel like each session has a purpose.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
