Whether you realize it or not, just by being here and considering a therapist you have already begun a journey of change. Whether you have a specific life goal or hurdle you are working on or if you are struggling with something like depression, anxiety, trauma, anger, addiction, relationship issues, or career-related struggles, my first goal is to provide you a safe, non-judgmental place to be listened to and understood.

Unfortunately, painful events in life are inevitable. The good thing is that suffering from these events can be optional. Helping people to build or rebuild a life with a new "normal" through these difficult times is something I have enjoyed doing for almost 25 years. I have had the privilege of working with people by addressing a variety of issues including substance abuse and other addictions, co-occurring disorders, trauma, depression, anxiety, relationships, divorce, unresolved grief, co-dependency, and anger management to name a few. Together, we can restore the peace, serenity and confidence back in your life.

Are you reliving past trauma or experiencing depression, anxiety, distress, or a general sense of feeling stuck? For over twenty-five years, I have specialized in helping clients with these as well as other life-interfering conditions. In today’s world, one can become easily overwhelmed, practice unhealthy coping skills, and develop a negative view of oneself and others. Often, we lose sight of the fact that there is a solution.

This can be accomplished in many ways and finding the unique way that suits the needs of the individual is how we'll effect that change.
I enjoy working with clients to help them reach their potential through improved coping skills, shifting to a more positive perspective, and handling the challenges we all face in our hectic lives. I have experience with individuals, couples, families, and children. I have extensive experience in working with individuals with severe mental illnesses and the families that support them. I enjoy working with families and the dynamics between parents and children. Improving the way families function through improved social skills and parenting techniques.

Is your child or teen getting on your last nerve? Are they defiant, angry, sad or withdrawn? Changes in the family structure, through a breakup, divorce, or death of a family member, often create confusion and unexpressed feelings in kids. Financial worries, relocating, peer pressure, violence, and other stressors at school and in the neighborhood, can lead to behavioral problems. Your child might have stopped opening up to you because they didn't want to worry you, or fear they'd be in trouble. I understand. I specialize in helping school-age children, teens, and their parents through challenging times.

In this setting, I have had an opportunity to treat individuals facing extreme states of hu man suffering, addiction, and hopelessness.
I am deeply interested in the interface between psychology and spirituality with a special focus on forgiveness, coping and mindfulness, brain-based and attachment-focused parenting, and schema focused therapy, which well equips me to assist clients facing life transition issues or relationship issues with a spiritual/depth dimension. I view psychotherapy as a venue where I can help my clients to change their beliefs, polish their perceptual lenses, adjust their relational patterns, let go of unnecessary suffering, and develop a deeper capacity for joy by learning to live more mindfully and gratefully.

You might be experiencing one of these: gnawing anxiety in your chest that just won’t leave you, dominates your thoughts, is changing how you live. Or the circling, dark thoughts of depression, where there is no pleasure in anything and everything is hopeless. Or maybe the effects of past, buried trauma have become un manageable, and how you used to cope is not working. Or, you have lost someone you love, and life now feels unwanted and impossible. Or despite others’ complaints, you can’t conceive of going without either alcohol, drugs, porn, food, or relationships to feel normal or valuable, to get through the day with less pain

I'm a generalist and enjoy working with many presenting problems.
I believe empathy, collaboration, and motivation are vital in counseling. As a clinician, I want to learn about what has gotten you to this point. I offer a safe, nonjudgmental environment to help facilitate this. I am particularly interested in your strengths, resources, past efforts, and goals including what you feel can and can't be done. I believe most problems stem from suppressed emotions, interpersonal difficulties, environmental stressors, or distorted beliefs and assumptions. Together, we will work to select the most effective course to achieve changes you want and need.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
