Life happens to us and sometimes it's not pleasant. Issues from our past as well as current stress has a way of affecting our moods, behaviors, and relationships. When our own attempts to cope and resolve these issues are ineffective, it may be time to seek professional therapy. I have helped many individuals overcome and manage a variety of distressing thoughts, emotions and behaviors. Common complaints include depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, abuse/trauma, panic, relationship issues, anger, stress, interpersonal conflict, moodiness, grief/loss, and major life stressors.

It is our perception that creates our reality. Therapy allows individuals the unique opportunity to explore their perceptions within daily life. I believe connecting the mind to positive thinking, understanding emotions, and gaining self-awareness assists youth in developing healthy coping strategies. I focus the majority of my practice in offering a warm, comfortable environment for youth and adolescents to achieve these three attributes.

You might be experiencing one of these: gnawing anxiety in your chest that just won’t leave you, dominates your thoughts, is changing how you live. Or the circling, dark thoughts of depression, where there is no pleasure in anything and everything is hopeless. Or maybe the effects of past, buried trauma have become un manageable, and how you used to cope is not working. Or, you have lost someone you love, and life now feels unwanted and impossible. Or despite others’ complaints, you can’t conceive of going without either alcohol, drugs, porn, food, or relationships to feel normal or valuable, to get through the day with less pain

Spiritual and hu man growth are two passions of mine.
I definitely understand that reaching out for therapy can cause anxious uncertainty and emotional discomfort. If this is the case, I'm SO GLAD you are making this courageous decision. Regarding my personality and therapeutic style, you will notice this immediately: I am warm, genuine, personable, light-hearted, and easy to connect with. You will also notice I am passionate about understanding your unique life story, including the personal struggles for which you are seeking professional care. I desire to relate to you as an equal, whole person rather than someone who "has all the answers." In sessions with me, you will know I care.

Our minds are our most powerful asset! Without our minds what are we ? But our minds may also be are biggest barrier... Are you a child, adolescent, or adult struggling with anxiety or depression ? Do you have thoughts constantly running through your mind day in and day out that you can’t seem to get a grasp of or make stop? Did you make some choices that landed you in a tough, not so desirable position with drugs, alcohol, or the legal system in general? If so, Payton is the person that can help.

“A step may be the beginning of a great journey” In life the first step is always the most difficult for people, the same can be said about therapy. Introducing oneself to someone they just met, trusting a stranger with their thoughts and feelings can be a truly intimidating experience. The purpose of therapy is to provide a safe space for a person to take the first step on the journey of healing and the personal growth that follows. Therapy is fluidic and follows an integrative, and adaptable path determined by the client’s goals.

I want to create a safe and supportive atmosphere where people can discuss their lives freely without fear of judgement. While the specific goals of therapy are always decided by the client, my overarching goals with each person is that they will come to understand their worth as an individual, and will find freedom to fully engage with life. I believe in not only addressing issues that hold people back, but also in exploring their unique strengths and interests.

Let's get honest, - if you are struggling with anxiety, depression, pornography, and intimacy issues, it is affecting your life. Counseling can be the answer. Struggles in relationships don’t occur during one spat or because of one negative event. Healing happens over a period of time as well, but don’t believe that old myth that says, “Time heals all wounds.” I have worked with many people who have discovered the source of their issues and found the right solutions.

My clients tired of being misunderstood and communication going nowhere with their partner. They come to me because they know their relationship cannot go on without some changes but they don't know how to get there. Who are you outside of being an athlete, employee, or boss. As a Mental Health Therapist and 10 years experience in Sports Medicine, I have worked with thousands of athletes, aiding in their physical needs to get them back to full capacity and into competition. Through my experience I have found that, whether on a court or in an office, individuals can only be their best if they are focusing on their entire health and wellness. Their mental game is as, if not more, important as their physical wellness in finding success. I focus on five factors of holistic health: creative, essential, social, physical, and spiritual.

I work with individuals/couples on relationship and sexual issues. Sexual and emotional satisfaction is nearly inseparable for both men and wo men! The defensiveness that damages relationships is often the same behavior that controls vulnerability and intimacy in the bedroom. Simple awareness of learned beliefs or unhelpful fears can create the space a healthy couple needs to heal. Sex and emotional connection shouldn't wait on the backburner until life gives us a break - emotional and sexual expression should mirror life! If that sounds challenging, remember, I don't suggest anyone to do anything they do not want to do!

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
